Mood wise I'm a 1, I don't get grumpy or stressed out. However, my effectiveness gets severely compromised pretty quickly. I've been telling people that I just feel stupid after a bad night (E is 3 mos) because I have issues with concentration, focus, response time and word retrieval. I hate it, feels like I'm losing my mind!

I'm a 1, maybe 1.5 if there's no coffee readily available. I did fine with odd hours at the animal ER and surgery, and now with teaching the only time I can really concentrate is after everyone goes to bed, so I'm usually just winding down at 1am and back up again around 6-7am.

I voted 3, I am a 2 when my lo sleeps decently 7-8 with 3 wakeups. Any worse than that, especially after two or more nights I am a 3, it's awful.

I didn't have time to listen to the interview. I wonder what constitutes "catastrophic." I'm a 2 about 50 percent of the time, but when it's days on end, I spiral into a pretty dark place....that's definitely a 3. Thank God my baby just started sleeping through the night (not until 8.5 months, but...I'll take it)

I am okay and function well with little sleep. PP insomnia has been awful and is still bad sometimes at 20 months PP. The Starbucks drive through has been my best friend for a while now. Hope the insomnia goes away for good soon.

I'm a 3. I get so very depressed when I'm sleep deprived. It takes me longer to get there than DH but I fall apart when I do.

Its a particularly relevant question today because i had a full nights sleep last night (thank you E) and I've felt great today! A far cry from the borderline depression of the last week!

I'm pretty well trained for sleep deprivation. I got up at 6:30 on Friday morning, and didn't go to bed until 9:30 this morning. It's 1 pm and I'm up again... And this happens at least twice a month when I work overnight shifts. My eyeballs hurt, but otherwise I'm ok.

I'm a 2 but I can get into category 3 if the sleep deprivation is hard enough. My LO is a pretty notoriously bad sleeper and there was a time around 3-4 months old that she was waking up 6-8 times a night and I just had so much anxiety regarding my lack of sleep because I felt so much pressure to fall asleep quickly so I could get like, 2 hours of sleep between her wakeups, but then that pressure would keep me from falling asleep. I had a couple of weeks where I was averaging about 3-4 broken hours a night and eventually I hit a mental wall and had a crying breakdown. Needless to say, that's when I scrapped the idea of doing more wakeups than DH while I was on mat leave. We started splitting her night wakeups and I've been more like a 1-2 ever since!

I'm pretty sure no one can function after weeks of getting 3-4 hours of broken sleep a night though.

@cascademom: I found it very interesting as well. I already knew a lot of what was mentioned, but it was a good reminder...especially about the futility of reasoning with a toddler!

I think I'm maybe a 1.5? I can function pretty well in general, but I struggle to complete tasks that require a lot of concentration (i.e., academic writing) and I probably am a little crankier. My husband is a definite 3. He absolutely cannot function without good sleep. I am the only one who has ever gotten up in the night with DD for that reason.

I'm a 3. I only had short periods of truly bad sleep with my daughter, so the third level very bad mental health issues were short. If I have a bad sleeper with this baby, I'll have to do sleep training, which I used to be REALLY opposed to. Now I understand that sleep training is less bad than severe depression.

Just listened to an interesting interview with the author of All Joy and No Fun - described as "a book about parental well-being."

She said that parents divide into groups depending on how they react to protracted sleep deprivation: 1/3 are OK, 1/3 are compromised and cranky and 1/3 are catastrophically affected.

http://www.npr.org/2014/01/24/265365876/a-parenting-paradox-how-kids-manage-to-be-all-joy-and-no-fun

I'm a category 2... although if there were a category 2 1/2, I feel like that would better describe my reaction to sleep!
