My husband worked nights for years and there would be days where I would leave for class before he came home in the mornings and then he would be gone when I got home in the afternoon. So I've gotten used to being alone. I get a little sad when he leaves, but I'm okay within an hour.

I remember when I had my own apt in college I swore I'd never want to live with anyone ever again, and I knew it would be hard for me to have a husband. But I was so wrong, I love having him here. I hate when he's gone. But now my mom will come stay with me to help out with LO and the pup, so at least I'm not completely alone here.

I used to be fine falling asleep by myself when I lived alone or in college when I had roommates but now that I'm used to him always being here I hate it when he travels! He hates it too though, & thankfully he doesn't have to go away very often for work.

OMG, I sound just like you. I was so independent and after we met I even went on a 10 month trip to Central America. Now though, I get so upset when he's gone for a weekend with the guys! I feel like a crazy person. Lately though I think it will be good for us, we have had a lot of "togetherness" for the past few months.

I don't like it! Especially when it's winter. But he's been good at dodging the trips now that I'm pregnant, he usually sends someone else to go but that's not always possible when everyone else is busy.

It doesn't phase me at all and it happens with usually about an hours notice so there's no way to prepare. He keeps a bag packed at all times and depending on the call he gets he either has to stay the night, work a couple hours during the day, work all night, etc. There's really just no way to tell. The only thing I don't like is that I don't know when to expect him home so I'm not sure if it's him coming in or an intruder. Luckily our dogs react differently if it's him versus something they hear outside and we've developed a rule where he calls first no matter the time so he doesn't get greeted by the business end of the pistol.

@emahlee: I think it's because when we're traveling, we're not stuck at home with the same routine. We're getting to see new things! Eat out! Have fun! At home it's just lonely and boring w/o the SO. :)

I hate when my husband has to travel! I become so clingy and whiney prior to him leaving that it gets embarrassing. When he's actually away, it's not too bad.

Weird thing is that I tend to travel more than he does and I'm more okay with being away than I am with him being away.

I actually don't mind it now for a few days but I know that will change when our LO is born. DH hates travelling as he'd much rather be at home. I like being able to watch whatever I want, eat popcorn for dinner, and not have to pick up after anyone but myself :)

I feel bad about this b/c I'm the one who travels for work way more than DH, and yet I still hate it when he has to go out of town for work. Luckily he's usually only gone for 1-2 nights, so I just try to make the most of it. I go to the late yoga class that I don't usually attend while he's in town. I cook myself something that I love but he doesn't, and I catch up on trashy TV.

DH is pretty good about dealing with all of my work travel. I often go out of town for entire weeks at a time. We'll have to see how this translates once baby comes. She'll either have to travel with me (plus a caregiver), or stay at home w/ daddy.

I didn't really care before the LO, haha. I'm very independent so I just did my thing. Now with the LO, I think he has only been away once...as have I. It wasn't a big deal. If it was more frequent then that would be hard but I guess you can get used to anything.

@ecogirl: haha seriously, isn't it funny how opposite we are? I guess people can change too-- my mom and dad always both worked and always insisted on doing everything together, but now she's not working and when my dad takes time off and is around the house with her, he drives her crazy!!! and I get my stubbornness from her, so maybe that will be Rob Sr. and I in 40 years ;)

@MrsWagon Yes in the same way if he told me that he was retiring and would be around all the time I would be floored. It would indeed be a huge life change. It's not like I don't love my husband haha I'm just used to this arrangement I suppose. I am not really as independent as you ladies seem to be though. I really didn't like when I lived alone and I like having people around all the time. Just not my husband I guess haha that sounds awful! :) I was only kidding about that last part!

I don't really mind at all when DH travels (it's not that frequent though) because typically my mom will come stay with me, and she's so helpful around the house :)
However, I've found that I really dislike traveling for work now and being away from DH. I used to live abroad and do a ton of traveling and LOVED it, but now I get really lonely for DH.

@mediagirl: I know exactly how you feel. The way I think about it is that I'm very stubborn and set in my ways, and that's why I was so good at being independent-- never had parents or a roommate to depend on and I liked it that way. So when we got together, that part of me really changed and I embraced that... so when I'm asked to change back, I get really annoyed and refuse!!!

Personally I think it's a sign of strength of the relationship rather than weakness of me as an individual :) I told Rob Sr. from the very beginning that if he needed to travel for work, I would never have married him. I just know myself too well. Some women are able to cope but that part of me just doesn't exist!! Obviously I wouldn't divorce him if he had to, but it would require a huge life change. Maybe moving closer to family and depending more on them, and/or traveling with him.

@mrs. wagon: I'm glad I'm not the only one. I feel like since I'm this big, bad independent woman that I should be okay with him leaving. Like you, he goes away so infrequently that it just makes it harder when he DOES go away without me!

Thankfully my husband only travels for work a few times a year (gone about a week, each time) but I’m ok when he’s gone. I miss him terribly, but it’s also kind of fun to have the house to myself again and live like I did when I was single (less so now that I’m pregnant since just gorging on sushi and guacamole and ice cream for dinner and staying up late isn’t the best choice!). I’m glad he doesn’t have to go away on a regular basis, though. I am very independent and both my husband and I need/like a lot of “me” time - even when we are home together.

I really dislike it too, especially because we're in such a rural place without family. It's really isolating when he's not here. He'll be going to Scotland for almost two weeks in April for a dream golf vacay with his dad, and I'm going to try to go visit family for at least some of that so I don't go out of my mind here with the kiddo.

I am exactly, exactly, exactly the same way. I'm extremely independent (never lived at home after college, always had a job, etc) but whenever Rob Sr. has to go away I totally break down. We have to prepare for weeks in advance (emotionally, that is!) and it always ends up being ok, but I just hate hate hate it! So we both travel as little as possible. He even got a $2,500 suite at a fancy hotel downtown, totally comped, for a conference he was holding and he only stayed in it the first night. He came home every night after that. Such a waste, I know, but ever since we got together I just hate waking up and going to bed alone.

It was tough in the beginning, but I've gotten used to it. DH hates being away too, so he'll take later flights out and earlier flights in to spend more time with us.
He was supposed to come home yesterday at 4pm.. imagine my surprise when he came home at 9am! He woke up at 3:30 to catch a 6am flight.. Totally made my heart melt!
