I'm kind of with @Lozza:. I mean, our generation had a lot more exposure to second-hand smoke, and we turned out ok. Our LOs will significantly less exposure to second-hand smoke. For the frequency it happens anymore, I probably would just let it go unless it's causing noticeable distress to our LO.

I'll do something passive aggressive like wave my hand in the air or say to my husband "Do you smell smoke? Who's smoking?" If that doesnt' work and I know they heard me/saw me, i would ask them if they wouldn't mind smoking elsewhere because we have kids or I would just get up and move seats/tables.

Because of the smokers I've come across who ARE conscious of who's around them and move if they see a baby or young kids or whatnot, I get really annoyed at the few times someone won't move away (or even look around) as they light up. I've never had to do this, but if I were sitting outdoors at a restaurant I'd ask them if they wouldn't mind moving downwind. If they refused, I'd leave.

I'm even a former smoker and it really, really bugs me now. I think walking past someone doing it and someone coming and standing next to me and doing it is different though. If it was just a person I was walking past, I'd just walk faster.

If I was sitting somewhere with LO and someone just came up to smoke, I would ask them to be considerate and smoke elsewhere. But if we walked into it, I'd hurry to somewhere else

It's not very common around here, but even being pregnant I steer clear of the smell. I'm a former smoker (gross I know) & I just wish people respected it a little better. We went to eat on Friday night and there was 2 guys smoking right in the doorway of the restaurant, very rude when there was plenty of room to be off to the side.

If we were at a dining establishment, I would ask to be seated elsewhere. Lots of places are smoke free now, thankfully so hopefully we won't run into this too much. As for people walking by, there isn't anything you can do so hopefully they'll walk by quickly and not linger around.

I live in NY too, and Ive actually witnessed a woman ask someone not to smoke near her baby, and the smoker replied "how about you dont have your baby near my cigarette?" I kind of giggled, but I did think the mom was a little out of line. They were outside on the sidewalk, and the smoker was there first. The mom walked by with a stroller and made a comment.

Anyways, Im with what @MrsBrewer: does.

The only time I'd care is if the setup means that we can't get LO out of the direct "line of smoke". If we're outside and someone is smoking at a table next to us but the smoke isn't really coming our way, I'd probably position LO to be furthest away from it, but I wouldn't ask to switch tables unless it was really getting all up in LO's face.
We have good data on the negative effects of secondhand smoke, but I think that's only for at least semi-regular exposure... I don't know of any good data on how this kind of intermittent, non-concentrated exposure would affect kids who don't have comorbidities or other conditions that would make it more of a problem.

I'm an ex smoker and I HATE when I see ppl (esp during summer time) smoke in public areas, let alone when there are children nearby.

I've also seen ppl who smoke with their children in the car...

It's gotten a lot better in MI at public places like restaurants/bars/bowling alleys etc. There's no smoking allowed anymore, so it's nice to go out to eat and not have to worry about smoke.

Um, I don't have a LO, but I would TOTALLY say, "Excuse me, but do you mind not smoking so close to my baby? Thank you!" I have had to bite my tongue not to say it on behalf of other people's babies before!!!

@MrsBrewer: I've had people come up to me when I'm eating outside and they come outside to smoke. They'll ask where I think the wind is coming from so they won't blow smoke my way. I think that's so nice and really appreciate when they do that. Yay for nice people like you, and good luck with the quitting!

@artbee: Completely agree!!! As a smoker (that is trying to quit!) If I ever see any babies, children, teenagers, adults, anyone! I always distance myself. I think it's rude not to. I would be the person that looks like the creeper because I park way at the end of a parking lot to smoke before I go into a store because I don't want other people by it

Walking down the street I wouldn't do anything. But if I were in a restaurant or cafe I would totally do the dramatic fake cough (because I'm annoying like that) and then ask to be moved to another table. Unfortunately if they are in a spot were smoking is technically allowed there isn't much you can do to make them stop. Even though if they had common courtesy they wouldn't smoke around children!!

We eat outside a lot because we like to bring our dog with us, so we run into this quite often. We've left restaurants when someone comes and sits down and starts smoking. Personally, I think it's so rude when there's people around you, especially a baby. I mean really can't you walk a couple of feet away at least? But I know it's not against any laws and they're technically not doing anything wrong, so I just get up and get my LO out of there.

It's getting more and more rare to come across cigarette smoke in New York... there are still a few scenarios that it occurs though:

1) You're inside a cafe or retail shop that has the door open, and someone sits down and starts smoking... and the smoke drifts in.
2) You're walking down the street, and someone walks by smoking a cigarette or a joint. (A ton of people smoke joints outside! I think that's not so smart, but what do I know.)
3) You're eating in an outdoor area at a restaurant, and someone else outdoors starts smoking.

When I'm by myself, it really doesn't bother me... but when I'm with the kids, cigarette smoke really bugs me. I'm curious how you guys react when you and your LO come across ciggie smoke.

How do you react when someone starts smoking near your LO?
