I leave my work bag in the bag by my LO as well. I always worry DH will do this because he has a "won't happen to me " attitude and he's totally ADD and distracted. He does get in and out of car all day since he's in sales, but I still worry! @NovBaby1112: All of you that have your DH text when drop off is made make me feel better! DH just says I'm nutty and paranoid because I've started making him do this!

I woke up and tinkered on HB in bed...I read that article and now am so horrified that I cannot sleep. Those poor poor babies:(

I almost wish H would wake up so I could hold her and smell her and all would be right in the world again.

Ugh, so sad! I actually noticed today at Walmart that they have a sign on their entry door that says "did you remember to take your child out if your vehicle?" such a good reminder/PSA!

@PrincessBaby: I feel same way. Before it was just me, she goes to daycare where I teach Pre-K, so he's always with me anyway.

I've never thought about trying to remind myself she's in there.

@hilsy85: Yes, that part about people not wanting the features because they didn't want to face that this is a tragedy that could happen to anyone really struck me as interesting. If there was enough support behind the safety measures hopefully they could get pushed through, because on some level there must have been similar arguments about airbags and seat belts once upon a time. Although, I suppose car accidents are more recognized as a part of driving.

@Revel: it's so interesting, the article talks about safety features that have been created but have NOT been added to cars because 1) the auto industry doesn't want them, and 2) research shows that PEOPLE don't really want them--they believe that they need them because "they would never forget their child"--no one ever wants to think it could happen to them. I agree, I hope those safety features eventually do become standard though!

Completely heartbreaking article and issue. I honestly had no idea this even happened! I couldn't put my 8 week old down yesterday after I read the article :( . I mentioned it to my partner immediately when he came home from work.

I agree with @NovBaby1112: that this should be raised when you take your baby home from the hospital. We had to read and sign off on materials about SIDS and shaken baby syndrome, and those issues I feel like are so well publicized that it was almost overkill, but this is just a horrible, preventable tragedy. I hope that in time extra safety features will be added to cars.

@hilsy85: that is so so heartbreaking, in tears right now. i cant even begin to imagine the horror those parents felt. but as sad as it is to read, better to be educated and mindful that these things can happen to anyone and helps spread the word to other parents. hospitals should pass out this article for people to take home to read after giving birth.

this is one of my biggest fears. my DH drops LO off in the morning on days we both work, and I always make sure he texts me every morning. It helps that he has to go a totally opposite way to take her. We also put all her stuff up front and he keeps his work stuff in the back, and also checks the car after he gets out. it may seem like overkill but you can never be too safe.

I just put a stuffed animal in the car for that purpose a couple of weeks ago. I buckle it into the passenger seat. I also put my lunch box, pump, and the bag with my work keys in the back. If I don't have the keys, I can't get into work and would have to go back to my car to find the keys and presumably see the baby.

This is seriously my biggest fear for lo. (Which may be strange because there are so many things that can go wrong - but to have your child die in such a horrible way because of simple forgetfulness is horrific).

I have been home with lo for the summer but when I go back to work in a few weeks, we are definitely going to put some system in place. Especially because dh always does drop off. I am thinking I will have him text me everyday at drop off. And I will definitely be telling the home day care provider to call right away if lo doesn't show up one morning.

This had me texting my DH just now. LO is so loud in the car it would be hard to forget her. But never, say never.

I like the idea of keeping my purse back there too. I want to say I'd always remember him but I think this can happen so easily, I'd rather take every precaution I can rather than bury my baby. I don't think I could live with myself if that happened to us.

Oh man is that article hard to read. We live in the city and we'll have a nanny so our risk of this happening is a little lower, the only time we use the car we are in there together going somewhere overnight so we'd be unloading everything anyway.

For the most part, the only time I'm in the car alone with LO is to do daycare drop off. Once, when she was very young (around 5 months) and her daycare was directly on my route to work, I drove about .25 miles past her daycare forgetting that I needed to stop and leave her. I was absorbed in what I needed to get done that day and just drove past. It scared me!

Now I have to go out of my way to the daycare and I take her 99.5% of the time. One the rare occasion DH takes her to daycare I feel strange going a different (direct) route to work.

Sadly, a woman at my daycare was involved in this kind of tragedy in 2007. It makes me think that she would definitely call if we just didn't show up for daycare one day like that baby didn't.

I'm really scared of doing this because drop LO off 4 days a week so am not in a 100% drop off routine. I started parking in a parking garage rather than the parking lot at work as an extra precaution. Sounds morbid but I think it would buy me more time to realize a mistake.

Whenever I get out of my car at my apartment without LO my neighbors always ask if I forgot her in the car. I try to see it as a sweet reminder.

@septemberlove: OMG this is making me tear up just thinking about it. I can see how it can happen to anyone. I guess since I'm a SAHM and have LO with me almost 100% of the time, it feels more weird when she's not with me. But this freaks me out at the thought of DH having her!

There were two instances of this around where I live within a couple of months of each other about 4 years ago. Neither DD or DS are very quiet so that helps me not forget them. I put DD/DS' stuff in the front seat with me and if I get to work and it is still there then they are too. It helps that our babysitter will call/text if we haven't dropped the kids off within about a 30 minute window.

@hilsy85: Thanks for the article!

How incredibly sad. I think the worst part of the article was when the founder of the organization said that one baby girl pulled out all her hair before she died.

There was the recent story of the mom who was consumed with her own grief over one of her employees committing suicide, as well as being overwhelmed with planning for her daughter's first birthday party, that she forgot to drop her daughter off at daycare and the little girl died. She ended up having the funeral for her on the day that was supposed to be her first birthday party. Devastating.

Right now, we have a nanny who comes to our house so we don't ever take LO to any location where she's not with us. But, I am petrified of this happening to me or DH and it weighs on me greatly. I'll definitely have to come up with something if we ever switch to daycare!
