Lol, was just talking about this with my boss this week. I wad telling her that I respect how well she takes a compliment and how I need to stop down-playing them. She reminded me that I have earned the compliment and need to accept and own it. I am definitely a work in progress though.

@BabyBoecksMom: I'm exactly the same as you! and it just occurred to me maybe 2 weeks ago that I never just say thanks and enjoy a compliment. I always have to downplay or self-deprecate or even make a joke. I'm going to try to just smile and say thanks. That's what i would like when I compliment someone - I like to know that maybe it made their day a little better, not that it made them uncomfortable.

I'm uncomfortable with compliments too, but I believe that's because I'm very shy and socially awkward, even around my husband! I try to just say thank you and move on.
My son has a few medical issues and we go to a military hospital and whenever he has an appointment I always gets compliments on his eyes (they're sky blue). It's nice to hear how pretty they are, but I never know what to say!

@catomd00: true, I hated my wedding hair after the fact in pictures and listed that as 1 of 2 things I would change. My BFF finally told me she wasn't going to tell me again that it looked great. I wasn't fishing for a compliment or reassurance, but she felt obligated to say something nice.

I just say thank you. For those who struggle with it, sometimes it's awkward for the complimented when you make a negative comment back and kind of feels like we need to re-compliment you or convince you. Soooo, a simple thank you might actually draw less uncomfortable attention to yourself! Just something to think about..

Yeah in the past I've been awful about giving a story or something. I try to just not make it a thing and say thank you. But I give tons of compliments, go figure.

I try to just say "thank you," but if I receive a compliment on something that I purposely did or thought was awesome too I share a story. The story may be self-depricating or a pat on the back, but either way it stretches out the moment too long like this response. I'm working on just TY!

A friend of mine would always let those around her know what a nice person the compliment giver was. I asked her why she did this since she always said she didn't like being the center of attention and by bringing me (or someone else) into the compliment convo shined a big spotlight on it and we would all have to tell the compliment giver she was so kind. My friend still makes a big show of compliments though.

I know this is a strange question, but I have always felt uncomfortable getting compliments (for anything; work, food, me, kids, etc) because I don't know how to respond to them. I usually end up downplaying it... Like, if someone says they like my hair, I respond with "oh, it's just a rare good hair day". :-/
