We go outside! This has been happening to us a lot lately! He's also really clingy when he's cranky so if I pick him up and do whatever I'm doing with him on my hip he calms down.

Going for walks outside seems to really help my LO when he's cranky. If the weather isn't nice, we usually take a drive somewhere like Target or Costco.

@Bao: Yeah, that can be a tough age b/c they can't communicate with you yet. My youngest is almost 18 months and even if he's not talking much yet I can figure out what he needs within a minute now. I still have to use distractions or something that I know will make him laugh or forget about why he was crying. Today he was fussing in the taxi and I said, "look, what is that???" He looked for a very long time and had no idea what I was talking about but he stopped crying. I also use books sometimes b/c he likes books. Hope you can find something to help. I think it does get better with age.

Distraction!

"Hey look look! (show him a family photo) Where is daddy? Which one is mommy? Which one is grandma?"

I have seen a video that the father would ask the toddler to locate her body parts (eg. where is your tongue? Where is your belly button?) when she was in a middle of a meltdown, and the girl quiets down and sticks out her tongue...etc. It doesn't work on my LO though.

Otherwise I'd go outside too if we were at home for too long, or just change whatever activity we are doing if possible.

If you are stuck in a restaurant and LO cries, I have seen a mom (my friend) calmly talk to her toddler and he calmed down. She said sometimes her energy and mood affects her. For me, if that doesn't work, again I'd redirect as much as I could. (eg. "look! there is some lights on the ceiling, oh look! There is a car that just passed by!")

Trips to the park, Target, etc. He gets really bored during bad weather. He gets lots of hugs if he's clingy during his cranky time.

She loves being outdoors so that seems to help...until we have to come back in again... She is soothed by hugs, though.

A has been pretty cranky lately, and not a lot has been calming her down. When your toddler is cranky, and it's not time for nap/bed/meals, how do you soothe them?
