Oh man. I'm super lazy or something. I don't separate anything!!! Everything goes into one laundry basket. As I'm transferring things from the washer to the dryer, things that need to be hung up do, otherwise, into the dryer it goes.

I do separate towels if we go through a bunch. Bed sheets always get washed on their own with pillow cases and duvets since they're so bulky.

Delicate air dry

And then there is the pile for the drycleaners.

We're terrible, we don't separate in many categories at all. When DH and I first moved in together, we each did our own laundry, and all these years later, we still do. So our categories are generally:

Mine
DH's
LO's
Sheets

We mix colors, we often throw any towels that need washing in with our own loads, and we just use cold water on almost everything so nothing bleeds. Works for us!

Clean vs. Dirty?

Seriously...I don't separate clothes, unless I need to get some whites back to extra white with hot water and/or bleach, in which case I just do whites. I wash everything on cold and dry on low. But, we don't really have dressy clothes that require much else. DH wears jeans and polos to work, and I pretty much live in jersey maxi skirts, old navy tank tops, and yoga pants. When I throw a load of our clothes in, I throw in lo's also.

I usually do 4 loads at a time:
- towels, sheets, DH's undershirts (hot, regular cycle with an extra rinse - necessary for towels in a front-loader :bummed: )
- darks (jeans, dish towels, DH's socks and boxers, dark t-shirts) (warm, regular cycle)
- light delicates (DD's light stuff, my light stuff, DH's non-iron dress shirts) (warm, delicate cycle)
- dark delicates (DD's dark stuff, my dark stuff, anything red, gym clothes) (cold, delicate cycle)

DD has 2 baskets: light colors and dark colors. She doesn't have too much white clothes, just a few dresses that will get washed with the light colors. She goes through a lot of outfits a day, she is so messy with food right now.

DH separates his clothes differently because his artist eyes seem to disagree with what I consider a 'dark' color.

He does his clothes and I do mine.

Are you diligent about separating colors, lights and darks? Do you have some other crazy system?

I usually separate towels and sheets into their own load, baby clothes into one (always washed on delicate), DHs work clothes, then our clothes into another. I sometimes separate denim, too, but usually don't sort beyond that unless I have something really white that I'm worried about getting dingy, or something new that might bleed. I need to step up my game and do lights and darks at least!!
