DD is getting more active when she's awake, and @msmini I know what you mean about the screech for attention, Lil does the same thing! We have been using the play mat a lot Lily loves to look up at the mobiles and kick around. We also have been looking at the activities on baby center website. Today I did one with dd that involved letting her smell pleasant scents, it was super cute to see her facial expressions! The website has some cute very basic activities based on the sensory and motor development of each week http://www.babycenter.com/0_lets-play-tube-talk-common-scents_1498424.bc

@Coco Bee: He is almost 6 weeks now, but for the past week and a half or so, he gets mad if you aren't actively engaging him (like if we are looking at the TV instead of him while he is awake) he screeches so we will look and talk to him more.

For the first month, just feed, change diaper, and cuddle! When he was awake we (still do) sat reclined on the couch with him propped up on our legs and chatted with him (this is his favourite). At about a month we started trying play mats and stuff, though he would still prefer to sit with us on the couch and chat.

@Coco Bee: We do tummy time on my chest as well! He won't even try to lift his head when he is on the play mat, he just lies there and cries. When he is on my chest he does quite well though.

Most of our time is spent feeding, changing diapers, and trying to get her down to nap. During her short bursts of quiet alert time I try to get some tummy time in (she likes it, so I guess I'm lucky). Then I put her on her back on her play mat and show her the different hanging toys. I also like making faces at her when she's watching me. I make a lot of "oooh" noises at her to try to convince her to coo. I also stick my tongue out at her to try to get her to stick out her tongue back at me. Apparently their tongue is the first muscle that they have really good control over.

I also try to get out of the house as much as possible, although that's more for me than for the baby. She usually sleeps when we're on the go, but it's a good mood booster for me to get outside and remind myself that there's still a whole world outside of my home!

@Mrsdaredevil: haha! I don't think you're baby is suffering from boredom, don't worry about doing too much!

As for tummy time, try tummy time on your chest. That's how we have to do it because Cobi hates floor tummy time! So once a day we lay in our bed and have him on our tummy. He likes it so much better because when he lifts his head, he sees us and then smiles like crazy. It's a lot more fun and he still gets his muscle strength time in.

We also did the same, lots of stroller walks when it was nice, but more than anything we cuddled on the rocking chair. I didn't really want to go anywhere until 4-6 weeks, so we cuddled and watched lots and lots of TV. After 6 weeks, I started incorporating my daily activities with his; he would be in the baby carrier while I prepared meals, he lays on the floor on a blanket while I do my hair, he's in his bouncer while I shower, he plays on our bed while I get dressed - I want him to know that not all the time will be his playtime while he's still young, so that he is ok with momma doing her stuff too :)

@lemondrop: @blushink: LOL re: boring! I just keep wondering if I'm doing something wrong here by not really *doing* anything with him. Well, today he decided to nurse literally ALL AFTERNOON (12:30 to 4:30 without a single nap.......) so I guess we have had some QT together today.

@Mrsdaredevil: Tyler has been anti-nap lately. Crazy.

We went on walks, read books, sang songs (I did this one a lot when he was a newborn), play peekaboo. I think mainly I took him outside for fresh air every day. That usually took up most of my day.

We haven't taken out the play mat yet. Will do so this week... but baby girl is sick with a cold, so I'm not sure she will feel like it!

Pretty much the same as you- he wasn't very interactive at first, a lot of cuddling and nursing, and I tried to get out of the house at least once a day. He wasn't even interested in looking at much in the beginning, so getting out was all for me to stay sane and learn how to juggle him with life.

To be honest, newborns are adorable, but pretty boring. Yes, I said that. But you are getting used to having a new person in your life, so it is a good thing that they don't need to be constantly entertained.

I have had so much fun with my son since he turned about 6 weeks old, and it just keeps getting better and better. That is when I started playing with him and having him notice that I am there and not just two big boobs.

Really, just enjoy the cuddling for now, more will come with time.

I'm only at one week, 2 days with a newborn, but so far not much! I'm lucky enough to have my mom home with me since my husband doesn't get paternity leave, but even with her help I am mostly just trying to keep a handle on household stuff and sleep while the baby is sleeping. I think just getting used to the sleep deprivation is pretty tough in and of itself!

We do basically the same as you.

She has a newborn book with contrasting pictures and a stuffed zebra so when she's awake she likes to stare at those, that's kind of our play for now. We basically just let her take in us and the world around her for engagement/interaction for now.

Go on walks, play music, talk and sing to her, read books, time on the play gym. She was a slow eater and it would take 20-25 minutes to get her to sleep so there wasn't time for too much activity anyway.

Oh, you mean with the baby? :)
I thought you meant "in general" and I was going to say "Four seasons of Friday Night Lights, plus Ilona Andrews' Kate Daniels series."
I have no idea what I did with my newborn. I feel like when he was awake, he was almost always just attached to a boob. I guess we took him out a fair bit. Moved his arms and legs around. Handed him to other people and let them talk to him.
I didn't really worry about engaging with him all that much when he was a newborn, honestly, but maybe that was because whenever he wasn't nursing I typically handed him off to someone else (I wasn't alone for a whole day with LO till he was three and a half weeks old, and that was only for two workdays, and then I wasn't alone with him again till he was 6 weeks old).
