Growing up, all of our gifts were from Santa, and we'd get one from the family pet. My parents *still* write "from Santa" on our large gift. I plan to have all of DD's gifts come from Santa, until she's too old to believe. I want there to be as much magic involved with the holidays as humanly possible. ;)

@lawbee11: I've thought about this, but when I was young and believed in Santa, I never had thoughts of, "Boy, my parents really suck; they don't give me anything for Christmas!" In my mind, my parents told Santa if I was deserving of x or y gift, so in the end, they sort of got the credit. They would regularly get phone calls from "Santa", and I would hear them talking about whether or not I was being good, or what they thought I deserved.

I go back and forth, my parents always had the "big" gift be from Santa and the rest from them. But I really would like them to know that mom and dad worked hard to give the big gift not some mystery man. So I'm just torn.

My thoughts are that the "big" things will be from Santa when she is little (like the one she REALLY REALLY wants that I tell her "Oh, I don't know, you should probably ask Santa".). Oh Man, Christmas is awesome. So excited.

Santa hasn't come to our house yet, my son will be three this year. He's just starting to understand if someone buys something from him, but he has no idea who Santa is.

No idea what we will do next year (not addressing it this year, lol).

We usually got something big as well as some smaller stuff from both Santa and my parents -- I'm not sure if they had a method behind it though. We got presents from "Santa" LONG after we knew that everything was really from mom and dad, though! In fact, Santa still gives gifts at my parents' house ;)

Not sure what hubs and I are going to do -- the baby is due so close to Christmas that I don't think we'll bother this year, but we have to figure things out for the future. Hubs grew up in a country where Christmas isn't really celebrated except by a few people in the religious minority, and US Christmas traditions are still sort of bizarre to him. He was just asking me last night if we're "going to lie to the poor kid about Santa nonsense" and if I was disappointed when I found out about the myth (I wasn't. Maybe I was an overly pragmatic kid, but as long as the presents were there, I didn't care where they came from -- actually, it was a relief in a way to be able to really thank my parents for all the gifts, not just some of them). Anyway, it's an ongoing conversation...we'll probably just play it by ear and figure things out as we go.

Santa gifts the big/good stuff and fills stockings at our house, while mom and dad give the OK things {clothes, shoes, books}.

For myself Santa filled our stockings and one bigger gift. Anything else was from the parents. I. Our stockings would be socks, underwear, toothbrush, some candy, smaller toys and fun things.

I plan on doing this for Isaac.

Same as @Mrs. Jump Rope: some gifts are from Santa, some from parents - no real method to the madness! I think with my parents, Santa tended to give MORE fun gifts. If we needed clothes or socks or whatever, those gifts were from the parents. Santa only brought fun stuff! But parents brought fun stuff too, so it was a mix!

ETA: I would say that if you want to continue to do the 4 gifts as your children get older, then you should do it from YOU instead of from Santa! That way you can continue doing that once they know Santa isn't real.

I never believed in Santa, so my parents always wrote "from Santa" on all gifts as kind of a tongue-in-cheek kind of thing. I'm thinking we'll just pick a random gift to be from Santa.

All of our presents from Santa were left unwrapped. All of the presents they bought for us or that we bought for each other were wrapped and put under the tree. After we went to sleep on Christmas Eve they sorted the wrapped presents into piles, and put the gifts from Santa in front of our piles. The gifts from Santa were always the big gifts - bikes, dollhouses, etc.

I'm wrapping everything this year though, because I think Sadie will have more fun unwrapping then playing with anything! I'll start leaving unwrapped gifts next year!

Well this will be our first Christmas, but my parents just wrote Santa on some gifts and wrote their names on others. But we just believed in the "spirit" of Santa so I knew they were all from my parents. It was just for fun!

DH and I just had this conversation. I asked him he thought the big gifts should be from Santa, or from us. His parents did the same as yours, where he only got gifts from Santa. This is not what I intend to do, my kiddos will get some gifts from Santa and some from us, because I want to teach them to give as well. I don't want me daughter to think "I have to pick out a gift for Mommy, Daddy, and brother, yet they don't get one for me."

I think we are going to do smaller gifts from Santa and the "big" gift from us.

Growing up we only got gifts for Santa. Then my parents bought a family gift, like a game, for all 3 of us kids. DH got a couple gifts from Santa and them more from his parents.
