I'm a SAHM and I think I'm still interesting, but just in a different way. People change and priorities change and now LO is the biggest priority in my life. I do tailor my conversation to whoever I'm talking to though. Childless friends get baby highlights unless they are genuinely interested while mommy friends get in-depth poop stories.

Since I am with LO all day, however, I do follow less current topics so I'll mostly default to asking what the other person is up to these days. Like Mr. Bee said, most people like to talk about themselves and I don't mind listening.

BTW, you won't bore yourself or your husband cause you'll be so enamored of your LO, that's all you'll want to talk about.

I am kind of a SAHM. I don't like to say that because honestly, I have a live in nanny so I don't have the same hectic schedule as other SAHMs do. I'm more of a SAHW with a child and help :) One of the main reasons I got a nanny even with just one baby was so that I could stay interesting to myself, my husband and others in my life and mainly so I could cultivate my interests and keep learning and evolving so that I could be a well rounded person. I volunteer at a pet shelter (considering I'm hugely pregnant right now I can't do much but answer phones) and a domestic violence shelter and am on the charity ball committee for the NYC library. I also take a French class twice a week and make sure to hit up a lot of playgroups. I want my life to be a blend of many things, not just me, my husband or my kids. I strive to be able to hold my own on a lot of different topics that will appeal to many people.

Your friend probably talks about those things because that is what she finds interesting now!

I don't really talk about DS unless it is something funny he did, or really cute. Otherwise, I talk to my friends about the things that interest them and that we still do. We do have a life outside children. It may not be as exciting as it was, but we make sure that we do things for us, and then we can talk about those things.

I think many people tend to be most fascinated in themselves. So if I want to be particularly interesting, I will ask people questions about their own lives... and then sprinkle in a little bit of color/wit on top of that.

I think it's just knowing your audience, I've noticed a lot of people will ask me about baby and then not really be interested in the answer so I switch subjects after a few minutes. Babies are fascinating creatures, way more interesting than any science experiment that I've done so I could talk endlessly about her but try to gauge the audience.

As for having more to talk about if I was working, for me I don't think so, I didn't talk about my job much before except to complain or briefly talk about what science I was doing, it did have a 'cool factor' in people's minds though because it was working with big names and institutions but in reality it wasn't interesting. So I think it's more about perception. I still talk about the same things with friends - relationships, stuff in the news, daily goings but now my daily goings on include baby so she's included in conversations.

when i'm with my friends who have babies, seems like all they talk about is their babies. i'm sure it's so hard to talk about anything else when they're such a big part of your lives. and i bet in the beginning, you can't really travel as much, or do the things that you used to do.... i think once you can reclaim that part of your life, it'll be easier to talk about.

also, i think people tend to talk about what's important in their lives. or makes up a big part of their lives. for ex. my hubby's a doctor - i swear, seems like all he talks about sometimes is doctor stuff, especially with other doctors! i think people mistake me for medical personnel because i've become so much more knowledgeable about that stuff.

I know many parents who keep up regular conversations. But like pp have said sometimes SAHMs have less to talk about since they are home most of the time. I dont think that makes them less interesting though.

For the first few months, I really didn't have anything to say that wasn't either about LO. Or Friday Night Lights, since I watched seasons 1-4 on maternity leave. But people kind of expected that, and I didn't go out that much.

Now I do think that being out and at work all day helps. I'm kind of lazy and disorganized and not good at being proactive and having a life when I'm home with DS, so I think if I were a SAHM I'd have more trouble. Going to work forces me to interact with grownups and stay current with at least some news, and put on real pants.

Honestly, it so happens that our closest friends are all having babies now too, so we just surround ourselves with other people who also want to talk about which carseat is best, or how to remove sweet potato from up your child's nose.

When I go out with friends who aren't baby people, I make a conscious effort to keep the LO talk to a minimum. We often end up talking about work, or sometimes we'll go out and do an activity that kind of leads to related conversation.

Ugh. I worry about this. I'm not a big talker to begin with - I hate talking about myself - so I'm soooo worried that I'll turn into that Mom!!!

I don't talk about LO unless someone asks me about her only because I don't want to be one of those parents who go on and on about their baby. Being a SAHM, my life is my baby and I try to keep in mind that not everyone cares that LO's poop looked weird today. :)

I am a SAHM and I still have interests outside of my son. I can talk about lots of things, like the books I am reading, current events, etc. When I was working, all we discussed was the finance world, so I'm actually more in tune with world events now than before.

I see nothing wrong with talking about your kids, as long as you share the conversation and ask others about their life. I do talk about her a lot because she is a big part of my life, but I also share the conversation. I'm not a STFU Parent, I'm a balanced parent.

Plus, since she's only 2 months old, most people still ask about her, so it's hard. LOL I'm a working mom, but I never discuss work. I didn't do that pre-baby. Work stays at work for me.

It's true. I'm a sahm so my baby is my life, I don't have much else to talk about. We still get out and do things, I'm not just sitting at home concentrating on her poo all day (usually ). So while my stories might not be as cool as they used to be, this is my life now, I love it, and that's what matter

I think working outside of the home gives you more to talk about naturally. I find my friends who are SAHMs only talk about kid stuff but that is their reality so it can't be helped.

You just have to be conscious of your conversations. DH and I will talk about LO but we really keep it to a minimum. We however, have our own lives still. So it may make it easier since our children aren't our entire world.

FH and I have so many friends who were extremely interesting and fun, and since having children, have become completely different people. Now they aren't able to talk about anything besides children. I understand that having a baby changes people, but this much? I was listening to my friend, who prior to kids regaled us about her travels, interesting hobbies, funny stories, and this weekend spent an HOUR discussing her 7-month-old's bowel movements, and could talk about little else. I see this so often, and it really concerns me that:
1. (most importantly) I will become like this, and bore myself, FH, and those around me to tears.
2. I will not have any interesting friends who can do anything without their children

Have you found people who are the exception? What did they do differently? Please give me hope!
