I am a big believer in making sure you have something in your house that is OK for the cats to scratch as an alternative to your furniture. It's a natural behavior for them, so I try to have a couple kitty scratching boards/posts to use. Put catnip on them if they're not interested at first. And I have seen it recommended to put the scratching post in front of the area of furniture they are scratching to show them what is acceptable and try to redirect them.
Cats... this stuff doesn't always work but it has helped mine stop scratching what we don't want them to by a lot!

Thankfully our cats don't scratch up the furniture, but our kitten loved to scratch DH's speaker covers. :( He was NOT happy. We solved it by getting the anti-scratching spray, having an awesome cat tower, and keeping their nails trimmed!

@Mrs. Bee: It's a good thing cats are adorable, honestly, because sometimes they can be real jerks.

@Mrs. Bee: it's super easy- just trim her nails shorter (the clear part of the nail), fill the cap with the glue provided, and push it onto her nail. Having two people definitely helps! You need to keep her from chewing them off for the first few minutes (obligatory snuggle time) then most should stay on for 4-6 weeks. You always lose one or two, but as long as most stay on it should give you the effect/protection you want.

I love them for our older clients that have blood clotting disorders. Some come in on a monthly basis for a nail trim and cap application.

Our cats don't bother our leather furniture, but they tear our fabric couch up. I think in the future we'll be sticking to leather.

A spray bottle of water and Soft Claws applied every 4-6 weeks to their nails. http://www.amazon.com/Soft-Claws-Cats-System-Medium/dp/B0006343W2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1385349240&sr=8-1&keywords=cat+nail+caps

Two of our cats aren't a problem, but one is a big time furniture scratcher. We keep her nails trimmed short and often, but initially we used Soft Claws nail caps to keep her from causing harm to the furniture and the kiddo. We use the spray bottle to reinforce behavior, but the nail caps really helped while she was in the learning phase.

We just got a new couch (threw out the last one since our cat ruined it). Our solution is to put packing tape on the edges or she will scratch up the sofa!

I've tried all kinds of things from feliway to sprays, but sofas are like catnip to cats!

Do your cats ruin furniture? How do you protect it?
