We have all joint accounts, but we have credit cards that each of us uses most often and pays the bill for each month. My only problem is finding the receipts in his pockets when I do laundry- so I usually unintentionally ruin the surprise.

I just put it on the credit card. I give the gift long before the CC bill would ever need paid.

It is easy for me because he never checks our accounts. :) But usually if it just says "Amazon" or the name of the merchant he wouldn't be able to figure it out anyway.

We each get x amount of money each month for us. We can use it or save it. It goes into our personal accounts that the other can't see.

i'm so bad. i don't really surprise him with gifts. like i wanted to get him the ipad for so long but he kept shrugging it off - it's just an expensive toy and he wouldn't find any use for it. then, for xmas, he gets himself one and he loves it! ugh! i wanted to get him the keurig but he's always like, nah, i don't need it. finally, he gets one and he loves it! grrr. unless it's something sentimental (like a photobook or something), he's so hard to shop for since he's so particular.

he also has a separate credit card so he can buy my presents anytime. he loves surprising me. which makes me feel bad.... technically, i have credit cards that i know he doesn't check. i think i should surprise him with a gift for v-tine's day. lol.

That's a tricky one. In my case, hubby doesn't check too often so it works out. He surprised me this past Christmas by using cash to purchase the gift. Or sometimes he'll tell me not to look at his computer, etc.

I have it easy-ish, because I get tips from the bakery I work at. So I just save them in the bottom of my purse, and have a stash-of-cash for secret surprises or emergencies.
If its something big, like the watch I plan on getting DH for his birthday, I'll get my mom to put it on her credit card and just pay her for it.

We used to use one of our credit cards and told each other not to look at the statements until after. But to be honest, I don't really surprise Rob Sr. anymore (I prefer to do things like "you need a new briefcase, let's splurge on a nice Coach one for your birthday") and I prefer for him not to surprise me anymore... sometimes he'll surprise me like "let's get you a new handbag", but I prefer to pick it out myself.

Not as romantic, but we collected a lot of clutter over the years and I prefer gifts that are guaranteed to be used! And going shopping as a family to pick it out together turns out to be a fun event too. We usually end up at the outlets and have lunch out there too.

My mom pays the bills, and my dad has a separate account for spending money/personal savings. It works very well for them. My dad doesn't care about money, my mom does.

As for my husband and I - I pay the bills AND I'm the one with the separate account. Fortunately, I don't care enough about money to check all the time. (I almost always use my account any way.)

I still have a seperate account that I keep open even though we only use a joint one for everything but its there if I need to use it.
Another option is to get a visa gift card/online shopping card, and then use that card to make the purchase which is something I have done also. That way the statement will not say where the $ was spent.

We usually will pay cash if the item is not online or tell the other not to check the online statement till given the o-k. During the holidays it is pretty easy for me, since I manage the money on the day-to-day basis. I think he has had his mom order things & paid her cash, etc.

In additon to our joint credit card we each have a personal credit card... but the bills are paid off from out joint checking account each month. So all the money is shared but we don't look at each other's credit card statements since we pretty much only use those cards for surprises to each other.

We have our individual credit card accounts that we use for all of our monthly purchases. When they are due we just pay them ourselves using the joint account so the other never really sees what we spend on anyway.

He knew where I went shopping during Christmas and for how much, but he didn't know what it was. For our anniversary I used a store credit card and paid the bill after the anniversary. So he didn't know what/where and how much I spent.

We each have separate credit cards and accounts that we basically never use except when buying gifts for each other. Even then, most of the time if we do use the joint credit card to buy a gift, it isn't really obvious on the statement online what it is. Neither of us has ever ruined a surprise that way.

@artbee: we have the exact same problem! The hubby manages all our finances so I'm always trying to find ways to surprise him without him figuring it out. Usually I will just plan my gift and then just buy it a few days beforre the event so that by the time he checks the statements its close enuf to the time he actually receives the gift. I have on credit card that he doesn't check all the time so I use that mostly. But still its hard!

I have my own credit card that DH is technically on the account for, but never checks and only uses for emergencies, so I use that for all shopping for him. DH takes out cash to go shopping for my birthday/xmas, not sure what he would do if he wanted to order something online for me...

we're the opposite! DH makes the money, and transfers it into our joint account, which I use to pay all the bills. this way, I could charge something and he'd never know.

however, it's much harder for him to surprise me..we each have our own personal account (that doesn't contain much) so he'll transfer into that - then I'm all over him wondering why he needed X amount of money that wasn't budgeted! very frustrating, lol!

we usually use cash if it's a place that we would recognize where it's from or if it's online and obvious what the gift is, we utilize our parents or siblings. DH has a harder time surprising me as i check the online statement almost daily. Since my birthday is tomorrow, I haven't been allowed to go on in over a week!

We have never had any trouble. When one of us has a surprise we tell the other to not check the statement online until we say it is okay again. The person planning the surprise takes over the money managing exclusively for a short period.

I always have this issue when buying hubby gifts. Usually I'll buy something online, I rarely tell him when I buy things for myself so he doesn't really know the difference. Or if it's in a real store I'll pay cash. I just bought him a pretty expensive gift (online, they don't carry them in stores yet because it's a summer item) and I paid with my mom's credit card and gave her cash. It's easy for my hubby because he's the one who pays the bills, I never even look at them.

Is it tricky for you to surprise your hubby if you have a joint bank account?
