I'd like to start teaching my son as well- he turned 4 in March. He knows my cell number and our names, but not sure how to go about the emergency part!

@Jess1483: phone numbers are hard! We have 10-digit dialing here so she has to memorize the area code and the number!

I also got her a (paranoid mom) bracelet similar to a medic alert bracelet. It has her name, address and our phone numbers on it. If we go someplace crowded she wears it.

@JennyD: I need to work on the address thing...we just moved. But LO1 knows his full name and our full names. He should probably learn my phone number, too.

I haven't taught DD to call 911 yet. She's 4. I have taught her our full names and our address though.

I need to look into it but I think you can have Siri call emergency if they don't know numbers.

@Jess1483: I was just thinking of books to help teach it! That might take away some of the scariness of it. Now off to look for some books!

@creativemomma15: Oh, bummer. That's hard. DS1 kind of takes it as "matter of fact." And it's so hard, because you don't want to turn it into a game--it needs to be taken seriously (obviously). Hmmm... what if you find good books for it? Would that be less scary, if it was happening to someone in the story vs. telling him a scenario? I think that's probably enough for now.

@Jess1483: We've talked about some of these things before but he always gets scared and it makes me feel so bad. I know we need to teach it more and reinforce it but I hate scaring him with it. :/

DS1 is 3.5. He can dial 911 on my cell and knows if he is lost to find a mom with kids (later we will talk about people who work where we are, but that's too abstract for now). He has a good sense for what is and is not an emergency, but mostly he knows to call if a grown up says or if he can't wake up a grown up he is with or if there is a fire. I think the trickiest part of nine online without a landline is that it would be difficult for him to locate the phone.

How and at what age did you teach you LO different safety things like...

-calling 911/for help
-what an emergency really is
-stranger tips
-what to do if you get lost
-etc... etc...

We've gone over some safety stuff but DS gets sensitive and pretty scared. I'm not sure how to best teach him these things without really scaring him! I wish we could just protect him from all the scary things out there!
