Just be honest, my friends waited 6 months into my pregnancy before I have them the green light to throw me one. I have always been known to hate attention so they understood.

@babycanuck: my mom is warming up to the idea of a shower even though it makes her nervous. Having it at 36 weeks is part of how I'm helping manage :) I've told friends why we won't share names ahead of time and would be totally comfortable doing the same with a shower!

@Jojogirl - I am, besides that I am really superstitious. Though I'm not pregnant yet I wonder about this often.

Are you Jewish? I am and debated having a shower since we typically don't do them. I eventually decided to have one (late) but if I hadn't, would've told my friends the truth. They would've understood!

I just said that I felt funny having one because in England we don't really do them (I live in Canada now, where they do) and I felt funny asking people for gifts. I just wasn't comfortable with it. My friends understood but I think they were disappointed because they wanted me to register so they knew what to get the baby : )

I just said that we are superstitious and that we'd have them over after we brought the baby home from the hospital.

For our first daughter someone still threw a shower, but it worked for our second :)

Typically in my culture we don't do baby showers, but would invite people after the birth to a meet and greet of some sort. It's great that people within the culture know this, but how do you tell people that don't that you don't want a shower and not offend them? How do you tell people at work that you don't want them to do anything?
