I try to have them come to us as much as possible. But bringing a lot of toys I know he loves helps. And giving them a heads-up that he'll get into everything and kind of laughing about it saying to put the water dish and remotes up seems to work.

Can you check out their neighborhood online and see if there's a nearby park? When you arrive you can say "I drove by a park on the way here, want to go check it out?" so you can at least go somewhere a little more comfortable with LO!

Yeah, I certainly wouldn't try to socialize with my very active toddler in someone's unbabyproofed house. If I'm hanging with friends who don't have kids, they can come over and visit. But I never do that, because I wouldn't get to focus on them. So for those friends, we just do lunch on the weekend when my husband is home.

@littlek: thank you. I feel like a complete weirdo about this so it's good to hear from other folks with mobile babies that it's not totally unacceptable to ask that we meet somewhere else or they come over to my house. She's invited me and our other friend with a 3 month old.

I usually ask people to come over. LO has a playroom and it's so much easier keeping him entertained (aka- contained) in there than at someone elses house where it may not be babyproofed. Other than that, I ask people to meet me for lunch. LO loves sitting in a h ighchair, so that keeps him entertained for awhile.

@.twist.: J's a good kid, he listens to me, he's just very active.
I'm never comfortable in someone else's house anyway but the stress of trying to plan out how I'm going to contain/entertain him kind of ruins the get-together for me.

@winniebee: thanks! :)

@winniebee: @anbanan15: thanks for making me feel normal! I don't want her to feel like she needs to "come to me" but it would be sooo much easier to keep J in his natural habitat, haha. We have a circular play yard with all his toys and a few totally baby-proofed rooms where he can run free without me worrying about him touching/breaking things.

@.twist.: yes! she suggested we watch a movie! are ya nuts?!

I guess I will write from the "friend" perspective since I don't have a little one yet (although my step kids are a totally different answer!).

We have a cousin with a very mobile and curious little boy. She brings him over every once in a while and I'm so happy to chat AND chase around her little man to keep him out of trouble.

I guess, I'm wondering, if most people who invite friends over with busy little kids just sit there on the couch and expect the other parent/friend to just sit there with them and totally ignore their kid??

I'm the same way. It gets me so nervous when LO wonders around touching things..I usually meet friends at a neutral location like the park for walks or we recently did one of those bounce center places now that our LO's are toddlers. Before they were really mobile we met at resturants or Starbucks for hours lol.

@rachiecakes: Moved it to general parenting : )

Yeah, it's hard now. Even yesterday, my friend who has a 12 wk old wanted to do something and by default, I asked her to come over. We have all of T's toys and stuff that keeps him entertained....it's just easier to do it at my house. Can you ask your friend to visit you instead?

@T.H.O.U.: I do, I usually have toys, he plays with my iPad, etc., but he's super active and loves to walk around and explore, especially when we are out visiting someplace new. He's not a sit on the floor kind of kid, haha
If it was nice outside (I'm in Massachusetts, it's cold and everything is covered in snow) I'd just suggest we go outdoors.

Do you bring your own toys? Or maybe even a new toy?

Will your friends understand when you have to sit on the floor and play with your son while talking to them or do they expect you to be sitting on the couch with them?

My friends are always asking me to come visit with DS.
All these friends either have small babies or are childless and totally don't understand that wrangling J into submission and keeping him occupied in their home is only going to stress me out.
Honestly, I'd rather go to a restaurant where a high chair can keep him contained while we catch up or go for a mall walk or something.

I get so stressed out trying to keep his little fingers off of their TV remotes, laptops, fireplaces, dog dish, cell phones, glassware, etc.
When I bring a Pack N Play, J only tolerates it for a short amount of time and it's a bitch to put together while keeping one hand on him.

Ugh.

Please tell me I'm not alone? I'm supposed to go to a friend's house this weekend and I'm stressing already.

How do you do this??
