@Coffee-lover: Yeah, I was afraid of wasting money, but she tolerates it b/c it's not secured to her head. It took a couple times for me to be able to just aim and then shove it in haha! She screams bloody murder when water runs down her face even though the shampoo is tear-free and all.

Thanks for all the replies. It's good to know I'm not alone. Hooefully she will learn how to tilt her head back soon and I will just continue to try to keep the water out of her face in the meantime

@mrswin: I wish I could use her baby tub forever, but she won't fit in it for much longer. I have herniated discs in my back and bending over the big tub kills me, I'll have to figure it out

When she was smaller and less resistant I would cradle her head on my forearm and lay her back and use the other hand to rinse with a wash cloth. then we went through a phase where she wouldnt let me lay her back so i would just do it as fast as possible and immediately give her a dry towel to wipe her eyes. now she's 2.5 and I only fill the tub 2-3 inches and she lays on her back and does "mermaid hair" while rinse with the wash cloth.

@SweetiePie: Haha, we do the same. Start 'em young and they'll be fine! :P

Sometimes now she gets mad when we pour water on her head, but we just try to make it a game. Like, DH will count to three very enthusiastically and then pour. Ha! And of course, lots of cheering when we're done.

I do the wash cloth method for my 7 month old (it was done for me like that when I was little). My husband just dumps it over her head. I know it doesn't really matter, but it feels a bit mean to me to do it that way.

I know my 5 year old niece still freaks out like she is going to drown if asked to lie down in the tub to rinse her hair. So they do the tilt head and cup.

I used to put this on her, but she started refusing it.

Then I kinda just roll up a small wash cloth and put it on her forehead.

Then I got this -

http://amzn.com/B001B1FHIC

I put it in place and we just pour a big bucket of water down. Super quick before she starts protesting!

I mostly just pour water over their heads and thy get upset :( LO1 (2.5) now is often, but not always, willing and able to tip his head back. LO2 often needs to get out and get a hug after hair-washing. We're not too concerned about clean hair, so I just don't wash it very much.

For some kids, it's a sensory thing, so no amount of pouring water over their head is going to help them to get used to it.

I use a washcloth and a small, handheld pouring cup. I also keep my son's hair short so that there's not that much sudsing and rinsing.

@Coffee-lover: my DD is around the same age and I have been bathing her in the big tub for the last 4 months. I taught her how to lay down in the tub and I just rinse her hair that way. Do you want to keep using the infant tub?

I tip DD backwards under the running faucet. I have done this ever since she was out of the baby tub. I hold her back and under her chin, tip her back and it's rinsed in seconds. She's never cried about it. If water gets into her face I offer her a towel or washcloth to dry.... she'll wipe her face about 75% of the time

I agree with others that you have to get them used to water on their heads. It sucks, but protecting them too much can lead to drama down the road - like when learning to swim.

With Xander, he didn't like the water going down his face into his eyes, so I'd try to press my hand over his forehead so that the water wouldn't get into his eyes, but it wasn't the most effective measure. Eventually, around 2.5, he got good at looking straight up so the water wouldn't get in his face.

With Logan, he doesn't care. I just dump water over his head and he thinks it's funny.

I just dump water right on their heads and do it quickly. DS tips his head back but won't stay like that, so it's a learning experience for him. DD is too little to be compliant so it's easier to just be fast and get it over with. She cries a little, but she's mad not hurt.

It's a constant struggle for us. DD hates water over her eyes. DH tries to get her to lean backwards into the full tub of water (which isn't very good at washing away the shampoo), I'm a little better at convincing her to just close her eyes while I carefully rinse - but that doesn't always work.

This was a huge drama for us as DD has long thick hair. We ended up changing the tap on our bathtub to have a diverter with a handheld shower hose attached. Ever since then it has been much easier, over time she matured and understands to lean her head back.

My daughter has been taking a shower with me since she learned how to walk (about 3 months now). The first week she got upset sometimes about water on her face, but she quickly got used to it. Now it doesn't faze her. She walks into the spray all the time. And I'm happy to find that water on her face doesn't scare her at swim class, unlike many of the others. So, basically, I'd recommend not making a big deal of protecting her face from water.

We were using the full tub at 12 months and she's sitting in the water. I lather her head up and use a big cup to rinse. I put my hand on her forehead and aim back from there trying to get it toward the back as much as possible. I don't use much shampoo, so a couple of pours of water and it's all rinsed. She also doesn't mind the water in her face at this point (18 months). On my older we use the hand held shower.

My son didn't learn to tip his head back until he was 3 so I would just rinse as much soap off the back of his head with a cup as I could then dump the rest over his face. I do the same with my 1 year old. I never really protected their face from water so they (usually) don't mind.

At some point when she was two my husband managed to teach her to tip her head back- he took over bath while I was pregnant and I don't know how he did it.

But before that, and even now, I give her a clean wash cloth to hold in front of her face, and try to pour the water back from her face so not too much gets on her, but it's not perfect. The wash cloth seems to help best.

I'm having the same problem with my 1.5 year old. She thinks I'm trying to tickle her when I tilt her head back, so she resists. I just slowly put water on her head while keeping my hand on her forehead. She does sputter sometimes, so it doesn't work perfectly. Hope someone has a solution!
