For berries... strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, and blueberries... I fill a bowl with water and let it soak for awhile before straining and serving them.

My MIL (korean) also does the flour+salt mixture to wash fruit! She says it cleans it really well, but I don't know the science behind it... so I've started doing it for certain things too.

It depends on what I'm washing--

if it's something I'm peeling (with a peeler/knife-- carrots, melons, pineapple, etc.), then I do a quick rinse under the tap.
If it's like a banana, mango, or orange, I don't wash it at all.
If it's something that I'll be eating whole, then I'll rinse it longer (apple)
If it's something that's "dirty" (certain greens, strawberries, potatoes)-- I'll fill a pot with water, submerge them in the water, and let them sit for a bit.

Used to use the produce wash but these days just wash thoroughly in water. I used to let LO eat a couple of strawberries unwashed on the way home from the farmer's market, but after washing them and seeing how much dirt comes off in the bowl I've stopped. Plus my husband works in a hospital and tells me terrible stories about kids getting sick from unwashed raspberries.

We use Fit fruit and vegetable wash. I swear it gets rid of all the residue and makes fruit/veggies taste so much better!

@crash806 : The fruit wash we use is found at the grocery store. It might be what you are thinking of.

I wash veggies in salt water. I scrub my fruits with plain water, but I wash them very thoroughly due to all the chemical sprays they are treated with.

We rinse with tap and use a little produce brush from Crate and Barrel (http://www.crateandbarrel.com/kitchen-and-food/prep-utensils/vegetable-brush/s250767). I feel like I'm getting a little more of the dirt and grim off with the brush.

I don't know what the science behind it is, but my mom always puts flour and salt in a bowl, fills the bowl with water, and washes fruit in the flour-salt water. She says it rids the fruit of dirties and etc.

I wash fruit for my LO the same way.
