@MegWag: I have a personal cell that I use as my work cell when I'm out of the office. i don't use the cell while at work. I use email or regular office phone. I guess I am old school with my business ways and think texting is unprofessional, especially since we don't use our cell phones at work.

I call since me being gone means they have to find a substitute for my class. I always try to make the call the night before or very early in the morning (before 5am).

My husband just has to put it into the computer system so it takes him off the call availability schedule and then as a courtesy they always warn the next guy in line via call or text so they know they'll be going to work sooner than expected and catching a different train than expected so they can plan their sleep schedule accordingly.

I call in if I'm sick or text if I'm late. I don't think texting is unprofessional at all, especially if you have work phones.

My company prefers email, I've only called in to say I'm running late if I'm stuck in traffic. We also use texts for important messages like delayed starts, etc. But every single person in our office has an iPhone and we're all pretty young, so I think its more acceptable.

@mediagirl: So do you have a work cell phone or something? I would view texting as inappropriate because, to me, that is a personal form of communication rather than a professional one. In my old job I didn't have my boss' cell phone number, so I wouldn't have even been able to text.

I'm all about email if you are sick and can't talk or are too miserable to talk. I guess I was just turned off by the text from a newbie. I've had two people now who seem to think it's okay to call and talk to anyone other than me and then this guy who texts. I guess I need to lay down my instructions before it happens instead of getting annoyed later. :)

@WinnieBee: That's what we do, except I just copy the partners in my practice group and my assistant with the email. I don't like for people to wonder where I am, especially now that I'm pregnant! Similarly, I don't expect my assistant (or an associate) to call me if they are going to be out - an email is just fine.

I always email. There are a number of people who need to know if I'm going to be out so it's a lot more efficient to send a mass email than to try to call them all. Plus, I get in earlier than all of them so they are normally not in yet for me to call them.

I only ever call if for some reason I can't access email. Email is much more efficient at my office- we all check email on our phones constantly, so if I email at 6 AM sometimes I'll get a "feel better!" reply within minutes!
DH has a really casual relationship with his supervisor, so they'll just text each other if their schedule changes.

Our office has a set policy for attorneys - if you are going to be out (sick or vacation or whatever) for a full day - send an email to the attorneys in the firm and copy the receptionist and your assistant. So, that's what people do.

I email. It's pretty standard to do that where I work since we all have blackberries. If I called, she actually wouldn't get the message until she got into work at 9:30ish whereas she will see my email right away. Plus like a PP said, I like to have the request and approval on file just in case. Not that it would ever not be approved, but my boss might ask at one point what days I called out so I will be able to tell her.

I am a manager and the texting bothers me too. That being said, I emailed in sick this morning at 3:30 am. My shift starts at 6am and my boss usually isn't in the office until 9 am.

I just had a new employee (less than 1 month) TEXT me that he is running late. I feel like that is completely innapropriate. If you are late or going to be sick, you call. If you can't get a hold of me, you leave a message. It's not difficult. Those are my rules.

If you work or if you ever worked, how did you call out sick for work or let your boss know you're running late?
