Oh man. I am extremely sensitive to motion sickness and so is my 4yo. He only became sensitive within the last year or so. We both take Dramamine; he gets the children's variety. Your child is too young for it, but maybe it could be an option in a few more months? I dose it depending on what mode of transit we are using and how long the trip is. I will give him half a pill for shorter car rides (we don't normally drive at all) or a whole pill for planes and longer car trips. We flew earlier this week and one of our flights was 10 hours long. The Dramamine wore off not long before we were supposed to land and he started to cry and complain of feeling sick. I got another pill into him and it started working within 20 minutes and we avoided a catastrophe.

@Bluebonnet: can I ask why your ped doesn't recommend Dramamine until age 5?

@catlady: LO got carsick a lot when she transitioned from the infant seat to a RF convertible. I turned her around just before her 2nd birthday and it got a lot better (now she only gets sick on longer trips when we're in heavy traffic).

Our doctor doesn't recommend Dramamine for children under 5, so that isn't an option for us.

We try to keep LO cool (in the summer we blast the a/c and in the winter we make sure she isn't wearing too many layers. We also avoid giving her a heavy meal right before a long trip. We also limit electronics, which seems to make it worse. Another tip - avoid sudden stops, sharp turns, and stop and go traffic as much as possible.

Someone I know dealt with this for a year. I think they finally found some success with using essential oils but I'm not sure which ones. You could maybe google it to find which ones to use?

@catlady: My niece has/had severe carsickness (she's 13 now), and they just had to bring towels, wipes, and changes of clothes on every trip. =( Her dad gets motion sickness easily too, but of course he usually drives so it's better for him. Now that she's older, they can just pull over and she throws up--they also have a variety of ginger chews and things that wouldn't work for a 1 year old. I know my sister did switch her ff at a year, but she still had car sickness issues on long trips.. Not sure if that helped shorter trips.

I'm so sorry. C got carsick one time and I'm scarred. Re RF- my friends son started getting carsick when they turned him forward facing. Weird because I heard that usually helps but not him. I know Dramamine is ok after 2, not sure about before, but you couldn't do that before every trip anyway.

Our daughter is 21 months and has been getting carsick since she turned 1, and it has gotten worse over time (it used to be every so often, now it is every time we are in the car for more than 20 minutes, and sometimes even less time).

Our strategies so far are simply to avoid driving as much as possible and when we do drive, to have me sit in the backseat with her with a towel ready as soon as she starts. So basically our strategies stink. I plan to try seabands but she's tiny so I'm not sure if they will work. She still rearfaces and I don't really want to turn her but I'm considering that too.

If your child(ren) gets carsickness, what strategies do you use and do they work?
