LO is now 8 months and I try to keep her engaged for most of her awake times, though I also just leave her on the floor sometimes for independent play do I can get stuff done. Up until 6.5 months all she had was a play mat, the kick n play piano, her exersaucer, a cloth book, and 1-2 toys. She was plenty entertained by these same items as long as I keep rotating her through these things throughout the day. In the past month I've picked up a few more items to stimulate her more (stacking cups, xylophone, wooden noise maker, ball popper machine). The thing I'm really working on with her now is crawling and standing.

I would really encourage you to not feel like you have to 'do' a lot of things with her. She should have a few age and stage appropriate toys to engage with, lots of time on the floor to move around, lots of your attention and love and engagement. She should hear music and see interesting things and be exposed to interesting foods. But babies that age don't need elaborate forms of entertainment or games played with them. All of those stimuli are plenty.

@MamaCate: LO loves itsy bitsy spider too, especially when i make gestures on her body!

@Coco Bee: What a great link! Thanks!

When my LO wasn't quite sitting up, we would spend some time with her in supported sitting on my lap. I would sit on the couch with my feet on the couch and knees bent. LO would sit on my lap and lean back against my thighs.

From this position I could show her books and she could try to turn the pages and not eat them. We also did physical songs like itsy bitsy spider (i made up gestures on her tummy and face, ie fingers crawl up her face, then go down, etc.) or wheels on the bus (arms or legs in circles for the round and round, back and forth for swish swish swish, etc.) I hope that makes sense. It always made LO smile, was fun and interactive for both of us, and developmentally appropriate.

Have fun!

These are all great suggestions :)

Some things I do with my 7.5 month old:
- Lots of floor play time (I usually surround her with several different toys, rattles, dolls, books, etc and let her explore)
- Time in her bouncy chair while I take shower/get ready. I rotate the toys so she has some new things to look at
- Jumperoo. I do try to limit to about 15 minutes per day so she's on the floor more
- Mommy & Me classes twice a week
- Library story hour once a week
- Visit grandparents, run errands, visit friends

- We do play time on the floor or the bed (she loves rolling right now, and she also loves touching *everything*!).
- Sometimes we go outside and lie on a blanket if it's nice outside (DD loves looking at trees!).
- Once per day or so I read her a book and sing her a couple of songs.
- We look in the mirror together.
- We "talk" with each other.
- We run errands. DD loves sitting in the shopping cart and seeing all of the things in the store.
It does get tough sometimes b/c DD is a terrible napper, so most of the day she is awake. Entertaining a baby all day long becomes pretty boring sometimes unfortunately...

Lots of stuff!! It is hard to remember all the things you can do with them.. They are pretty easily entertained though.

Most of our days involve getting dressed, eating breakfast, playing on the floor time, a few chores then nap time. Books, more toys, he watches me do some chores like folding laundry. He loves to practice his crawling so he has been really happy on the floor lately as long as I stay near him. Bathtime is a huge favorite too. He could probably spend an hour in there if I let him.

Yeah, my LO isn't awake for a long time to do too much. He takes long naps and is awake around 2 - 2.5 hours at most before he starts to get tired. I sing, read books, and let him play with toys on his own as well.

LO will be 6 months next week. She plays in her jumparoo and we read books, sing songs, play hand games, practice grabbing toys (she loves to grab them and drop them on the floor), and tummy time.

@caffeinated: Remember that everything is new to them, so even just a change in environment can be stimulating and exciting. If you think she's getting bored, try moving to a different room or going outside for a change of pace.

One thing I've started doing is rotating out the kids' toys. I organized their toys into containers based on type, and then I only let them have one container out at a time. It helps save on mess, and sometimes they'll go days without playing with a "type" of toy. When they finally bring that container out again, they get super excited; it's all brand new!

@Ms. Fairy Wings: We are planning on enrolling her in swim classes...though i didn't realize how popular they are and most of the prime spots are full!

@Mrs. Bee: right now, she munches on any object i give her. those are some great ideas for when she's able to sit up!

@Honeybee: i've been working on helping her with developmental milestones, but i also want her to have some independent playtime. i'm trying not to buy her too many toys, but sometimes i worry that she gets bored with the same stuff.

My Lo will be 6 months next week, I do bicycle legs like Mrs Bee mentioned. She loves when I hold her hands in mine and alternate between putting her hands on her face and then mine. and while I do it I say "mommys face, babys's face"
I also do want to take her swimming in a few months and will be introducing solids next week and allowing her to play with it sometimes

right now the toys she has are freddie the firefly, winkel, sassy bugs and a few cloth books

You can work on milestones like rolling, crawling, grabbing/holding items, passing items between hands, making noises with your mouth, etc...

Some of things I do with just DS (6.5 months): finger games/songs/nursery rhymes, encouraging him to crawl, practice standing, practicing "talking" by making different sounds/blowing raspberries/clicking my tongue/etc... at him, helping him grab and hold items like balls/blocks/cars, playing peekaboo, and giving him different textures/materials to explore, A lot of the times, I just let him paticipate in whatever I'm doing with my older daughter, so he goes with us on walks/hikes, to the park, rolls around on the grass when we're playing in the backyard, plays blocks and dress up with us, tries to eat crayons while she's coloring, etc... At this age, I think they just want to be involved, and it really doesn't matter what the activity is, so don't feel like you have to "do" a lot. They learn so much just from watching you and hearing you speak.

how about introducing some sensory play? fill ziploc bags with different items -- shampoo, water, etc. you can tape them down to the table so she won't try to eat them.

you can fingerpaint with yogurt -- practice eating and sensory play in one!

you can exercise them doing bicycle legs (good for digestion!)

we pretty much just left olive in her bouncer most of the time at that age. she was content just to watch charlie.

One thing I did was take a blanket outside and a few of his favorite toys. I would also keep him by me while gardening and talk to him about what I was doing. He's almost a year now, but you should see him! He thinks he's a farmer. He digs in the dirt, he picks veggies and fruit and he loves being outside!

Swim lessons are another thing we did that I found fun.

What do you guys do with your little one when he/she is awake? I allow myself one set of errands/appointments a day which take up an hour. I usually let her play in her jumperoo, or i'll have her roll around on the floor with some toys so she can practice moving around. I'll read and sing to her before naptime, but that's about it.

I feel like i should be spicing things up, but i really don't know what to do. I sometimes feel like a lazy mom because i just do the same things with her. I can't make the library storytime sessions because it interferes with naptime. Are there any toys i should be introducing to her at this age? Any ideas?
