Kickball leagues are huge here for that age group... beer usually helps provide some social lubricant as well.

Join neighborhood Facebook groups - I've met people through our neighborhood book club and supper club. And if there's not one, she should start one! Also look into clubs like Junior League, patrons of the art museum, etc.

This is kind of similar to a hobby, but a religion can also help you find like-minded people. Obviously this doesn't really work if you're not religious, but I know for me being Jewish gives me lots of opportunities to meet other Jewish people. If religion isn't your thing, maybe there's a certain cause you can volunteer for. An animal shelter, a food bank, a senior home, a children's hospital, something like that.

I agree that you need a hobby with a strong community around it. I know people who've found this through swing dancing, running/rowing clubs, frequenting the jazz music scene... I also know people who've found a group to play music with via Craig's List or other online platforms. Pretty much everyone I know late 30s/40s who is single is really dedicated to some sort of organized hobby, I think largely for the community...

@graceandjoy: My bff moved to a new town about 6 years ago and only new a few family members. She also joined a small boutique gym that is more dancing focused and met most of her friends there. She's now in her early 40's and still single and still does party with the 20 year olds on occasion. :)

I found my core new group of friends through a barre class I went to every week... I think small gyms or studios are a great place to meet people! It just takes time and going regularly and you inevitably end up building a rapport with people.

In a brand new town? I'm crowd sourcing for my friend!

She is in her mid 30's, newly single, moved to a brand new city and started a brand new job. She said she has co-workers to hang out with after work sometimes, but not at the comfort level yet to really let loose with. Or people at her age bracket mostly have families, and going out with the younger 20's crowd seems weird...

I gave her some suggestions but want to see what the hive has up their sleeves!
