With both my kids I traveled with them to visit my family, the first at 4 months and the second at 2 months. We had get togethers/BBQ type casual events and people came to meet them. With one it coincided with holiday season so it wasn't "about" us but just good timing for us to introduce the baby, and with the other it was just to meet baby so we didn't do gifts although I think we got a few anyway. We had a shower for the first baby though. Anyway point being it can look however you want! My family likes casual so that worked for us. :)

We had one! It was really for MIL's friends (she threw it) but it was still cute. He was six months old though. People just came by for apps, cookies, champagne, and to hold him. He slept the whole time. They brought small gifts. Two hours total.

ETA
If you agree I'd wait until 2 months so she has her shots. Good luck!

Re: germs - for the most part, we've waited until the baby was 9-10 weeks and we are super vigilant about making sure people washed their hands and/or used sanitizer prior to holding the babies. They have also mostly been in spring and summer so we didn't worry about flu/cold season.

Also, my friends and I are all pretty relaxed about other people holding babies, letting young babies nap whenever and wherever, and nursing in public, so sip n sees (or brew and views) are not stressful for us. If the idea of lots of people touching your baby and not having them take a real nap is stressing you out, you would probably be better off having a sprinkle or baby blessing or something.

Given the choice between the two, I really think the sprinkle is likely to be less stressful than the sip-and-see. Can you just ask your mom to do something really quick and easy like brunch at a restaurant with anyone who wants to come?

@snowjewelz agree 10000%. Think about the germs!! Even after a 2 month old has gotten their first set of shots, they are still so little and so susceptible. My LO was hospitalized at 3 days old for a suspected infection and after that... I don't mess around with the germs and little babies!

Also this just sounds like a logistical nightmare - what if it's naptime, what if your baby screams 24/7 (like mine did), etc.... blah.

Yeah I feel like this is a no go for me b/c people will want to touch/hold the baby!

I don't have personal experience with this but have thought about doing this with our second due at the end of February. My plan would be to do it after the 2 month vaccines. No way would I do this with a tiny unvaccinated baby.

I had November babies so a sip and see would have been a no go for me because of flu season. Plus, I didn't like sharing my newborn snuggles  I had to go to work function when my son was 3 weeks old and I wore him in a wrap just to be sure no one would try to touch him. So I totally understand your germs fear! I really just wanted to post to say that it's really up to YOU if there is a celebration associated with the birth of YOUR child. It's great that you mom thinks there should be, but it's not her choice. So don't feel forced to do something you don't want to do to make her happy.

Usually they occur after the baby is born (the see part). Gifts are given, but not opened at the party. It's a casual stop-by type of event that has light snacks (like the delicious tiny sandwiches, petit fours, etc) along with wine or tea (the sip part).

Here's a good summary:
https://www.thebump.com/a/sip-and-see-party

Pretty much just like a shower except no games and gifts are optional. When I have hosted/attended there was no mention of gifts on the invite. If people wanted to bring a gift, they ask the mom or the host what is needed. Sometimes there has been a low key activity for guests to do, like decorating wooden blocks or writing notes to the baby to put in a scrapbook.

I'm expecting my second daughter and my mom keeps bringing up wanting to host a shower or sprinkle. I really don't want one but she's insisting that the baby needs to be celebrated. My weekends are swamped as it is so having to find a weekend for this sprinkle just stresses me out. Plus I really don't like showers. I was going to suggest that we wait until the baby is born and do a sip and see type of party. However, I've never been to one and have no idea what they entail or how they work. Looking for your experiences about these types of parties. Thanks!

Edit: what about germs? How do I not freak out about all those people (and their germs) being around a new baby?!
