@Mrsdaredevil: Ditto, I always start right after nursing so I have some time!
But... if he gets hungry earlier and I only had a beer, I still feed him ( like @Coco Bee's midwife said, a little alcohol is sometimes recommended)
@cvbee: I know I was going to paste that same quote. Thanks!

I've heard the rule "if you're too tipsy to drive, you're too tipsy to nurse". Now, some people I know consider themselves able to drive after drinking a LOT more than I ever would, but for me I'm comfortable with drinking a glass of wine and not worrying about timing or dumping.

@cvbee: I pumped and dump while I fed my baby refrigerated breastmilk. I had to express the breasts because they would hurt if I let them go 6 hours!! I was doing it to give me time.

@Coco Bee: yeah, it's a bit controversial. I've heard through the grapevine that a doctor in my town told a Mom who had an evening-colic baby to have a drink and nurse the baby. When I hear things like that, or like what your person said, it makes me not freak out if I'm nursing like 1 hour and 50 minutes after drinking.

interesting...

my midwife told me that a wine or even a beer is good for milk letdown and getting over new-mom nerves. She never said I had to wait to nurse. She said it wouldn't hurt him at all. I have a glass of wine here and there, probably once a week, and never followed any two-hour rule.

@mediagirl: that link also says:
"Because alcohol elimination follows zero-order kinetics, drinking water, resting, or 'pumping and dumping" breast milk will not accelerate elimination."

I always go by the one hour per drink rule (12 oz beer, 4 oz wine, 1 oz liquor). To be safe, I usually will have a drink immediately after I feed her so I know it will be three hours until her next feeding.

I will drink a beer sometimes immediately after pumping or feeding because I know I have time. I had a margarita last weekend that killed me. I did pump and dump for that b/c I'm not sure how much alcohol was in it and I felt loopy.

@cvbee: That's an awesome chart! Thank you so much!!!

I'll probably only be able to handle like one glass at a time anyway. I had 2 sips of DH's malbec last week and I swear my legs felt all numb and rubbery when I stood up!

It's approximately 2 hours per drink. You only have to pump and dump if you need relief due to engorgement.

There is a great chart that shows how long you have to wait per drink based on how much you weigh.. Let me see if I can find it.

edit: found it! scroll to the bottom at this link: http://www.motherisk.org/women/updatesDetail.jsp?content_id=347

Yeah, don't pump and dump--just wait (I think it's 1 hour per drink depending on your weight).
Just remember some strong beer is 1.5 drinks, most mixed drinks are 2+drinks.

Also... beer can help your supply. :)

You don't have to pump n dump. Once the alcohol is out of your system, it's out of your milk. I used the milkscreen test strips to determine when it was all out of my system.

ETA: If I have one glass of wine, I'm usually clear 2 hours after I finish the drink.
