Ours started with a high-ish fever (101-102) and a very miserable child. It was obvious he was feeling horrible. The bumps came last for us. I think he also had a terrible diaper rash. The blisters on his hands and feet came later and took forever to clear up.

Ours started with what looked like a weird diaper rash -- like it could have been a fungal rash, all bumpy, but was clearly bothering him. When it spread to his feet, that was the giveaway, but the fever never got too high - 101 at the highest, maybe? And, FWIW, he had a relatively mild case but the bumps looked a lot more like a rash or pimples than actual blisters.

For us, it was a super-high fever (it got up to 105). We tried giving her a smoothie, and she said it was spicy. We looked in her mouths, and saw the ulcers/blisters. :( There are so many different strains, so the presentation can look different for different kiddos. Fingers crossed it's not HFM.

LO started out with a few red bumps that look like large, flat pimples, and a fever with a looooonnnggg nap. No pus-filled blisters ever. I think there are different varieties of hfm though.

My kid had it twice. Both were 102 fevers that broke. 24 hours later a horrible yeast like diaper rash, 8 hours later blisters.

@PinkElephant: he’s in daycare but shoes on all day. He did walk outside barefoot over the weekend. Maybe it’s an ant bite!

@travellingbee: Is he in daycare? Baby gym classes? Just wondering if his feet touch any potentially germ-y surfaces outside your house - if so, I'd guess that he just came into contact with something icky, which is gross, but better than one of the previously mentioned alternatives. I also thought HFM blisters were red and dryer. DD's were on top AND bottom of her foot, which made our situation extra weird. I'm convinced maybe they were insect bites.

@Foodnerd81: Same as what you said! I saw a weird red blister on DS’s toe and I realized it was from his shoes being too tight :( We just got new ones.

Both times it took me so long to figure out what it was that I can’t remember how it started! My younger one had it almost a year ago and I remember she was super cranky and not eating well, so I thought she was teething or possibly getting a cold. Then I thought her eczema was getting worse. Finally I realized it was worse on her feet and hands and butt (luckily not really her mouth). By that point we had totally exposed her little friend who came down with a worse case than she had a few days later. No super high fever though.

All you can really do is watch and see and try to prevent spreading it if you can.

@travellingbee: DD3 (16 months) had two weird blisters on one of her feet a few months back. No other symptoms, although with her history it's very possible she'd also had a recent ear infection. I went into mass panic and was convinced she either had HFM or had picked up molluscum contagiosum at the gym daycare or something....but they went away in about a week, and nothing else ever happened.

Hope it's the same for your LO!

Fevers for us, both times we've had it!
My daughter had a super high fever with no other symptoms then woke up with spots. A few days later ds had a one day fever and the next morning his face was covered.

My daughter had a weird blister looking mark on her hand last week and we thought it looked like HFM but it turned out just to be a little scrape.

DS2 has a weird blister on the sole of his foot. He recovering from a double ear infection that he came down with last Thursday (no fever), but other than that hasn’t seemed sick. He was in a happy mood. I’m paranoid that it’s the start of hfm but I thought I read that it starts with a fever and he hasn’t had one... any insights? Thanks!
