I have done this in a Drive thru and "received" in a drive thru. Receiving was SO cool. I did it for the person behind me in hopes it kept going! Where I was, after you pay and are settled, the next persons total comes up at the window, so you can see their order and just opt to cover it. I have started it when someone behind me looks like they need it, or have a cute dog in their car or whatever sparks thinking it!! Obviously if they have multiple meals or crazy total I have not!

I think it's so fun and haven't done it in forever, going to next time now!

Semi-unrelated, but there is a local restaurant where you can put 2.00 towards a coffee or breakfast sandwich or 4.00 toward a lunch sandwich and they keep a tally on a chalkboard. if someone comes in who can't afford a meal, they just have to ask for it. I usually buy a lunch every time I go, and there are always extra tally marks- and I regularly see people requesting the free meals. Somehow it doesn't seem like its abused, and I think its a really nice thing to do for our community.

@snowjewelz: You could just buy a $5 gift card and ask the employee to use it on the next customer, then it's more anonymous.

@Adira: Ok, so I guess it's more commonly done at the drive-thru, which is what I was guessing!

@catgirl: Ohh, the giftcard way is nice! I feel like I'd be too awkward to just be like um, can I pay for that? Haha!

I have only done this in the drive through.

I know when my mom does it at her closest Starbucks (which doesn't have a drive through) she does it one of two ways - she either just stands to the side as the next person is ordering (while she waits for her drink) and offers to pay once they have ordered. Or she buys a $5 or $10 gift card and hands it to someone walking in as she is leaving.

I've only done this in drive-thru and received it in drive-thru, where you pull up to the window, pay for your order and then offer to pay for the person behind you. I'm not sure how you would do that in line unless you just left the cashier with money to put towards the next customer (and I guess keep the rest as tip??).

So maybe I'm just overthinking this! I have never been the recipient of this, and I rarely go to DD/Starbucks/fast food so I rarely think about doing this.

But how does it actually work? Is it cash only? But then could the cashier just pocket it for themselves? I can see credit working for drive-thru since the cashier usually knows the total of the next order already... But what if you're physically in line? You'd either be covering the next person's order fully, partially or even have some left for the next next person?

I want to do this but clearly I live under a rock!
