My 11-week old daughter is hit and miss with the bath. Sometimes she seems to enjoy it, although she has a very serious look on her face while she's kicking her legs and flailing her arms (I joke that she's trying hard to swim away!). But sometimes (like tonight) she wants nothing to do with the bath. Even on the good days, she doesn't like being taken out of the bath because it's so much colder. Until she consistently enjoys bathtime (or at least stops crying at any point in the process) it will probably become a nightly relaxation thing. Right now it's only a cleanliness thing although I have begun doing them at night since they'll need to be at night when I go back to work.

Oh bathtime! I was so excited for it and then it was pretty rough in the beginning days with our little miss. I actually wrote a post on this and it is coming up on the blog any day now! The jist of it is that eventually they find it soothing and it just takes time and a little adapting for the people giving the bath. Stay tuned for my post, I really hope it will help :)

I wanted to add we started LO in a "tummy tub"http://www.chinaberry.com/p/TummyTub.cfm?tid=628021802&zmam=7946946&zmas=2&zmac=252&zmap=16056&zmam=7946946&zmas=2&zmac=40&zmap=16056

DH says we should've just used a bucket (he's probably right) but it started a really positive association with the tub that carried over to when he outgrew it.

LO likes the bath but it seemed to ever stimulate her for it to be right before bed and she would scream, I think she would get too cold. So I do it during the late morning, goes over much better. I am going to try and move it be part of the bedtime routine once she is a bit older.

DD use to look really tense in the bath. Her fists would be tightly clenched and I would have to pry them open to clean. She's 3 months now and is okay w baths. Doesn't love or hate it.

@hilsy85: when did you stop using the sling? I would like to stop using the sling too but afraid her head will slump down.

He loves the bath and the sound of running water. It makes him super mellow. But then he gets really cold and cranky while we're drying and dressing him. He doesn't have a problem falling asleep but I'm still nursing to sleep so I don't know if the bath helps! He does love his little foot massage I incorporated at the end once he's in his jammies :)

@Smurfette: our LO hated it until he was able to be in the bigger part of the infant tub--he hated the sling part because it held him out of the water.

LO loves the bath--it definitely excites him! We follow with pjs, book, boob, and bed, so he has time to unwind after bath.

Lo loves bathtime! She's 6 months and I think splashing helps to wear her out. She knows its part of her bedtime routine because after her bath and has her sleep sack on, she's super relaxed and cuddly. She then knows its time for boob and bed.

DD loves bathtime! It doesn't exactly make her sleepy... she is usually particularly alert and happy in the tub. But she knows that it's the first step in her bedtime routine, so she definitely knows to expect that sleeping is pretty much the next thing on the agenda after the tub.

LO loves bathtime! We have never done it as part of his bedtime routine though as I am too lazy for that at night (I'm a morning person). We mostly shower with him in the morning and have done that since he was pretty young. He now sits in the shower and plays with toys while I shower. We do baths for fun and playtime sometimes though.

My LO loves baths. He just turned 7 months, so he's playing with toys in the tub now. It does stimulate him, but I also think it relaxes him at the same time. After bath time, we change into pj's, then we watch a Baby Einstein "Baby Lullaby" DVD (~20 min) to calm him down and get him ready for bed. Following his movie, he gets a bottle, then bed.

LO screamed throughout her first 3 months of baths. But at least it wore her out :) Now she loves them. I don't know that the bath itself is relaxing for her, she is playing and reading her bath books and splashing. But I think it's the routine. She knows that after bath is night night time.

before LO arrived, i had always heard about incorporating a bath into the bedtime routine. i thought we would do the same, visualizing this relaxing bath experience that would throw him into the drowsy but awake stage, except in reality the bath seems to put LO into this weird worked up and jittery state, almost like he's caffeinated. he doesn't complain when he's in the bath and seems to think the sensation is interesting, but almost a little too interesting considering that we're preparing for bed.

does your LO like baths? do they find it relaxing, stimulating, or fun? if it is stimulating or fun for them, how do you calm them down afterwards if the bath is near bedtime?
