Mine are 19 months apart, #1 stayed in the nursery crib until he was 26 months then we moved him into a twin bed in a different room and #2 started sleeping in the nursery. Up until then #2 was in our room in a PNP. It worked out great! I thought #1 would have issues giving up his crib/room but by then he was excited about his big boy room, we hyped it up big time and have him one of those light up star turtles as a gift for his new room, he loved it!

We moved LO to twin mattress on the floor at 19 months and he adjusted within a week. Recently at 2.5 we added the bed base underneath because he's big enough to climb up now. It was really pretty easy.

We put her in a toddler bed around 18 months and she got out once at nap time and I told her she needed to stay in her bed and she hasn't gotten out since...she's 2 years 3 months.

@Mrs. Confetti: I was just going to say the same thing!

I'd use a PnP bassinet or something along those lines for the initial few months until you feel your toddler is ready for a big bed. My LO is 19 months and we've just had our second baby as well. I wouldn't feel comfortable moving my LO out of her cot yet, but we plan on using our PnP with the new baby for the next six months anyway so it's not an issue.

@wonderstruck: just remember that your newborn won't necessarily need the cib right away- s/he could stay in a bassinet/pack n play for up to six months if you decide your lo isn't ready and don't want to buy another crib

So helpful, I'm hopeful after reading that many of you had success at an earlier age! But like @locavore_mama: said, I agree that I wouldn't want him to associate the two events, so maybe we'll give it a try a month or two before the baby is due and see how it goes. Then there's still time to buy a second crib if we need to.

We moved to a toddler bed at 15 months with no issues. She does sleep on a cot at daycare which helped with the transition I think.

We transitioned at 19 months into a twin bed (with box spring on frame so LO had to access with a stool) at 19 months and never had a problem.

i wish we had moved charlie sooner. the only reason he stayed in his crib until 26 months was because his sleep sack stopped him from climbing out. he could climb out way before then. the transition was horrific!

with olive, we inadvertently transitioned to a floor bed at 26 months. if we hadn't i think she would have easily been in her crib until 3+ and she never would have tried to climb out. but she started wanting to sleep on her floor bed recently (i used to nurse her and fall asleep next to her in the morning for an hour).

that is kind of young, but it really depends on the child!

We converted LO's crib to a toddler bed right before 20m. Her sleep is generally bad and transfers difficult so we really had nothing to lose. The transition was very very smooth h for us. Transfers became so much easier. She hardly ever got out of bed in the beginning. Now when she waked up if we don't get her immediately she will grab her blanket and get out. But her door is always closed so it's not a problem.

I think it depends on your child. We truly felt she was ready for the switch and I think that's why it went so well.

#2 is due in August. We plan to switch LO #1 to a twin after she turns 2 in April. I want to disassociate the two events so she doesn't think she's losing her bed because of the new baby.

@PinkElephant: That's exactly what I was like as a toddler! I would just sit at the edge of my bed and yell, "I'm up! I'm up!" until someone came and got me. I don't understand why climbing down never occurred to me either, but let's hope my son takes after me, haha! And good luck, let us know how it goes

@sarac: I hadn't considered a floor bed before, but it's an interesting thought.

I have bought a toddler bed for Lo#1 and plan to move her when we get back from vacation in a few weeks. She'll be 20 months old and this will give us 2-3 months to transition before LO#2 arrives. The only thing I'm apprehensive about is potential midnight exploring (that is getting out of her bed and playing or rifling through her dresser). A friend told me that she never showed her daughter (around the same are as mine) that she COULD just climb out of bed and somehow it just hadn't seemed to occur to the little girl?! Sounds crazy but I'm hoping I'll get lucky too!

We loved her around 18 months. We set up her room with a twin bed with a rail and she asked to sleep on there so we let her. She never went back to the crib and still doesn't crawl out of bed.

We moved my older daughter out and into a bed at 2 no problem. My younger daughter is 23 months and has been out of her crib just on a floor bed for about a month without a problem. So far, neither girl has fought sleep, dealt with massive falling out of bed issues or had trouble sleeping.
We moved my older one out 2 months before her sis arrived, and started talking about the crib as the bed for the new baby. No probs with transition.

Hoping to hear from some of you bees who moved your LO out of the crib early on - let's say, before age 2, and how it went. Was it fine after some time to adjust? Or was it an epic disaster where you ended up putting the crib back?

I know I still have time to figure this out, but I was putting together a list for myself of what we need to buy for baby #2, and I'm unsure about the crib. I looooove the crib in L's room, and am hesitant to buy another because it was kind of pricey, but he will only be 17 months when this baby is born. That seems pretty early to move him out of the crib, but I know my mom did it with me even earlier; she just put up a side rail on the bed and had no problems. I guess we'll see how L's personality develops and if he's the type to stay in bed or be all over the place - currently he really likes bedtime and falls asleep fairly easily. But I wanted to hear some stories about how the crib transition went for others if you did it early on!
