Our lovie specified for 9 months plus and I started at 6. We practiced putting it on her head during the day to make sure she could take it off and started with naps where I was watching her. I started giving her a blanket around 10 months. She is blanket obsessed. At 12 months she could lay on her belly and cover herself with the blanket and stays under it! She started sleeping better once we gave her more blankets! Now she has two full kinky blankets, 2 minky lovies and a soft doll in her crib lol.

At 6 months I gave an a&da security blanket so small square with satin lining super breathable. Although at almost 8 months she still doesn't really care about it. Sometimes waves it around like a flag if she's hyper in her crib.

We introduced an Angel Dear lovey around 4/5 months. (Our ped okayed it--actually she said at our 4 month appointment when discussing sleep training, "you know you can give him a lovey, right?"--but I know everyone is different in what they're comfortable with!) LO rolled/sat up really early and the Merlin suit was basically useless after 4 months anyway.

@winniebee: I think Logan likes snuggling his A&A blanket too. We don't swaddle him, but the blanket is in his crib with him and he seems to like rubbing it against his face. They are sooooo breathable, so I'm not worried. They do make security blankets though that are super small that you could try!

Transitioning from swaddle to sleep sack was much easier with our first!! He has rolling to belly to sleep there by now.

@shellio: we have one and he hates it! Too hot for him I think! Also have tried zipadee zip....

We introduced a A and A security blanket (basically a small version of the swaddle) around 6-7 months old when she started waking up when her hand wasn't touching me anymore. So I gave her that when I nursed her to drowsy. It's so small and breathable I wasn't worried about it. Plus she was rolling over and removing blankets from her face during the day when I "tested"her.

We gave our DS a small very thin blanket as a lovie even later than that (maybe 11 mos?) and we still walked in one day with it over his face and he was acting like he wanted it off and couldn't get it off. It was super thin so I wasn't too worried but after that experience we are waiting till 12 mos at least with the next one.

As a side note, look into the Merlin Magic sleep suit for weaning the swaddle. It seems ridiculous but it totally works.

We waited until after a year for safety and because it didn't really seem necessary. He wasn't super attached to anything. I also wondered if it would become a projectile object / "come back in my room because I dropped my blanket" thing.

Edited to add we transitioned from swaddle to A&A sleep sack and the "vest" as we called it was definitely a big part of the bedtime routine for awhile!

Around 6 months, I let her start falling asleep with one of her Angel Dear loveys but I'd sneak in and take it out of her crib once she was sleeping. After a month or so of that, I felt comfortable letting her keep it all night.

She slept with her A&A lovey from 6 months on. She's now 21 months and cuddles it every night. I'm actually still nervous about letting her have an actual blanket. I think I'm being irrational. She's still in a sleep sack though.

I felt the same as you, around 5 months I thought he was probably ready. Though not swaddled, we still covered his hands with socks because he enjoyed rubbing them on his face, but I was nervous to put a lovey in the crib. At hid 6 month checkup our Ped actually suggested it. And it made me feel a lot better when I covered his face with a light blanket or lovey he was able to pull it off.

We gave her the little A&A lovey (like ten inches square) pretty early, 7 months maybe? It's too small to wrapped up in and super thin and breathable.

I still get paranoid that she will get tangled in the regular swaddle blanket, at 21 months.

I gave my LO a blanket puppy square around 7 months old that he still sleeps with - it was too small for him to get tangled up in or pull over his face. An option would be to make a small square of A&A cloth and attach it to a small stuffed animal or sew on tags. My LO loves sucking on the tags on his blanket!

I wouldn't until a year - that's what the APA guidelines say (plus I'm paranoid). I'd first try not using anything and see how that goes before introducing anything. http://www.healthychildren.org/English/ages-stages/baby/sleep/Pages/Preventing-SIDS.aspx

R is 5 months and seems to love cuddling his A and A blankets during the day and in the car. He's still swaddled and we have had a rough go at weaning him from it. I'm toying with the idea of giving him an A and A lovie for sleep as we get him out of the swaddle. Good head control rolls consistently back to belly (but rarely belly to back). Sits well with assistance.

Thoughts?
