We are all very close and enjoy spending time together, but are not huge communicators so we're not chatting or texting or anything (but I don't do that with my girlfriends or husband either, so...). We get along really well.</p> <p>Brother #1 lives two states away (quick 1-hr flight or 1 day's drive), but comes to visit 1-2x per year, and going forward I'd like to go visit him at least 1x a year as well. Brother #2 lives only 30 minutes from me, but works in an industry that takes him far away from home for 6-8 months at a time. And then relatively close with him again from age 16-18. Now we rarely talk because he hates talking on the phone and we live across the country from each other.</p> <p>I was not close to any of my siblings for a while in my late teens and early 20s. Now that my sister has kids, we are MUCH closer! I have never been close with my youngest sister.</p> <p>The ebb and flow of our relationships over the years has helped me realize that sibling spacing probably doesn't matter that much. It's more about personality and stage of life. </p> <p>My husband is four years apart from his younger brother though, and they didn't get close at all until the past couple years. A lot of girls in a small house means lots of drama! Now that we are older, and 2 of us live on our own, it's much better. I suspect it will be better still when everyone has their own place! In general, though, we are really close.</p> <p>I grew up thinking that this was normal spacing, because it was similar for almost all of my friends, to have siblings 2 years apart. DH has a wider gap in his family (3 years and 11 years younger), and they are all pretty close as well. I had to let go of the idea of kids close in age. Hoping now for a 3 or 3.5 year gap!</p> <p>Eta: my parents also had a rule growing up that if we couldn't get along with our sisters, then we weren't allowed to have friends. They would cancel our plans with friends if we couldn't make peace with each other. They always told us "your friends will come and go, but your sisters are your sisters forever."
