@Foodnerd81: we gift to most of those listed - our mail and UPs drivers have always given us Christmas cards so I also sort of feel guilt if I don't reciprocate lol

One way I keep costs down is that I give them all gift cards ($10) I get using CC points, so I'm not out much actual cash for these gifts.

@Truth Bombs: our recycling and trash men have been awesome this year - we have been cleaning out and they take every single thing - I would love to gift them this year.

They taped a Christmas card to our trash can this morning so I have their names - how do I gift back? Do you tape cash to the trash can?

@Truth Bombs: right- I want to do "the right thing" and show my appreciation, but don't want to go overboard. The gymnastics one threw me because we've only been doing classes for a few months, but her teacher is really nice and I know my kid is the troublemaker, and the teacher goes out of her way to help with that. But I'm thinking like a homemade ornament and some cookies.

What you do for the mail and garbage people?

I was just thinking about this today. We do the daycare workers. Last year we gave the cleaners an extra $75 but this year I'm thinking that seems ridiculous when they run their own business and all our money already goes to them - that's a full extra cleaning, so I might cut it down this year. I also left an extra $20 for the pet sitters which is also crazy because we get charged double for holidays and we're not using them Christmas Day this year.

We do something for all the people you mentioned (teachers, mailman, garbage man, cleaning people). It's adds up but I do feel like it's the right thing to do. These people all work hard and we are fortunate to be able to give, so we do.

We do something extra for the teachers, the paper delivery guy, the dog walker and the mailman. It does all add up.

Yikes. No one like that. We have a cleaner - she started like a month or so ago. I didn't even think I should give her something.. 😬 Maybe wine!?

I feel like you could go broke with all the possible people to gift around the holidays. I was planning on a small gift in addition to the class gift for my daughters part time preschool teachers. Done.

Then I saw a FB thread about gifts for gymnastics or dance teachers, and our garbage man left a holiday card with his name, and I wonder about someone like the mail man? Plus I remembered we should give our monthly cleaning lady something extra... I don't know where the lines between stingy, normal, generous, and excessive, are.

Where do you fall? What seems normal to you?
