Plans with our families involve travel so they are generally made several months in advance. If we are just staying home and no one is coming to us then we make local plans a couple weeks ahead.

@coopsmama: I start asking our families what's happening about 3 weeks in advance, then plans are roughed out usually about a week out.

But we have the general understanding we'll be at this house on this day. Our families live about 4 hours a part so there has to be some planning.

@coopsmama: this used to happen to us all the time. Now, we make plans and then tell everyone our plans and ask when they would like to celebrate.

Stinks that FIL assumes you're just sitting at home waiting to celebrate with them.

Like two days before... we just never know if someone will wake up with a cough and a runny nose and all our plans will go out the window. But our families are in the same city so there are no travel plans to make.

We've had a rotation since we we first started dating - one year we do Thanksgiving with my family and Christmas with his, and the next year vice versa. We do our own thing for Easter since there's no time off that goes along with it, and both our families are at least a six-hour trip away (one by car, one by plane). I'm sure one day some other commitment will pop up that will throw our schedule off, but we try to maintain it as strictly as possible to reinforce boundaries (mostly with my mom, who wouldn't be satisfied even with ALL the holidays to herself).

Almost a year out for major holidays. Birthdays usual about 3 months. It takes a lot of coordination on both sides.

We usually make plans at least a month in advance, however my family all live several hours away and DH's family live 10 minutes away. So they assume they get us by default for every single holiday! It's annoying to me, because sometimes I would rather just celebrate at home with my DH and son, but DH feels like since they are so close, we need to stop by for every holiday.

The only holiday we are "locked into" is Christmas, we alternate years since our families are on different continents.

Other than that, we're pretty flexible.

My mom had the opposite problem. She tries to lock everything in months in advance. Sometimes I haven't even thought about what I want to do for a particular holiday and she starts demanding an RSVP. She gets so caught up in hosting. I think she feels nostalgic about it but I do not. I like being an adult much more than I liked being a child so I tend to bristle at her attempts to recreate those family moments.

At least a month. But honestly, we check in with both sets of parents to see what they were thinking of doing. We also often get together with both sides since my sister lives a plane ride away my parents just come to wherever we are, and my IL love having them if they are hosting. Recently we have been hosting a lot since our house is big enough to host 15-20 and I like to cook. We also have a few sets of friends that we always invite. The more the merrier in my little corner of the world.

Depends on the holiday, but usually at LEAST a month in advance!

My parents actually just invited us over for Easter too, but we already have plans with my in-laws and I know my parents are just doing a last minute low-key thing, so they don't really care that we can't make it.

I'm pretty stubborn about stuff like this - when people invite me to things last minute and I already have plans, I don't change my plans. If those people really want me there, then they need to make plans with me earlier. This happened a bunch with my in-laws. They used to invite us to things last minute and then were pretty upset that we were always turning them down. So now they make plans with us in advance, and whenever they do, I try to be SUPER accommodating with them so that they know it's worth it to make plans in advance. :D

That's really annoying, and I know from experience, because my IL's do that too.

We plan a good 3-4 weeks ahead and we only live 5 minutes from both families. We've tried for years to coordinate so we could see both sides of the family, but the IL's side makes plans very last minute, and typically because they do this, the plans always interfere with our other plans. They've definitely taken offense to this, no matter how far in advance we've asked them about holidays.

We're at the point where we just don't see them because they don't make enough of an effort to make plans in advance.

Years. We alternate countries for holidays so plans are made well in advance.
MIL doesn't get this and gets butthurt when we don't spend Christmas with her on my family's year. And then skips her turn to go to tennis camp.

Both sides of the family have a pretty regular rotation on the holidays, so we don't usually have to plan for them. If we were going to switch up something major (e.g. changing who is hosting, switching from brunch to dinner), we'd likely at least talk about that *this* Easter, in preparation for *next* Easter.

DH and I try to decide which side of the family we are spending a holiday with at least six weeks-two months in advance, so that we can take time off work or book flights as necessary.

My family is mostly local and DH's family doesn't really celebrate a lot of holidays since my MIL passed. So our holidays are pretty set in stone in that the majority of them are at my grandmother's house. The only thing that might change in the future is the location when she feels like she can't handle hosting.

We usually get them sorted 2 months out - just figuring out who's hosting what night, but that's it. DH's family is "I'll call Monday for you to come Friday" people and it drives me batty.

(I'm not saying they need to sort it out 2 months out, but a couple of weeks notice would be nice)

That's so annoying. We don't normally plan in advance, just cause family's so close. This weekend we have plans Sunday to go to my parents house, and I'd been meaning to invite my MIL. She lives alone and we try to make an effort to include her as much as possible, even though it's a pain since she doesn't drive outside of her neighborhood. I hadn't got around to calling her and then my partner mentioned it to her, and I think she felt like I didn't really want her to come since I didn't ask her. I invited her yesterday and she said wasn't sure and didn't want us going out of the way. Then she invited us over to a Greek feast cooked by her neighbors boyfriend Saturday!

So now I feel like we obligated to spend our whole weekend having Easter meals. I don't mean to sound like a brat but it's kind of a pain when we look forward to some quiet family time just us 3 all week!

Months? Easter lands on Easter.....so we celebrate on Easter.

Kids birthdays have sometimes been told to me with 2 weeks notice. And my calendar is often planned at least that far in advance, so sorry, I often can't make stuff.

If FIL was hoping for an Easter celebration, he should've brought it up a few weeks ago. Not < 1 week in advance.

I'm just wondering how far in advance you plan ahead. We told my grandma a month ago we'd spend Easter with her at her home and today received a text from FIL asking if we could come on Sunday. DH told him we had plans and he asked about Saturday and DH told him he was taking me on a shopping trip date he had been promising for weeks and asking if they were free at all any other day this week.

FIL replied ":-/ We were hoping for an Easter celebration, I don't know what to say."

It really peeved both DH and I off but we've rearranged our plans to be there Saturday.

How far in advance do you plan for holidays? Do you have a rotating schedule or do you celebrate at home by yourself? (Obviously this question includes holidays outside of Easter as I know some don't celebrate it... )
