There is an app called Hopper that was recommended to me. You can put in your travel information and it will look up prices and tell you whether you should buy now or whether the prices are likely to go lower. I have no idea how accurate it is since I've only used it once, but it was recommended by both a friend who travels a lot and a travel agent.

I usually try to aim for 6-8 weeks out but further out for holiday weekends. We're actually flying that weekend and I booked our tickets a few weeks ago cause the price was insanely good.

It depends somewhat on where you're flying (esp international vs domestic) but Kayak offers a price history/prediction tool that can be helpful. I would usually buy a domestic ticket 2-3 months in advance and international closer to 5-6 months but it doesn't hurt to check pricing history/prediction now. If it's a good price - book it!

I know, it's really hard. For travel during super busy times (around any holiday), I book as soon as I know dates. Otherwise, I try to use price trackers to help me guess. Once we actually rebooked because a price went down so much it was greater than the change fee; there's a service (maybe on kayak) that will email you if your flight price reduces enough to do that.

I never know! I've done it where I've bought and prices lowered and also didn't buy and prices never went down again.
