The furthest I have left the house was my front yard to trim some bushes. I kept watch on my phone, and I was still so paranoid.

@Mrs. Champagne: Leave the MONITOR with a neighbor?! Holy cow! I feel like that's so irresponsible. What if someone broke into the house? Or there was a fire? You can't react to those things appropriately with just a baby monitor.

We live in a house and I would get the mail or groceries or work in the garden (with the monitor). But I wouldn't let the house out of my sight or be gone for longer than a few minutes.

We live in a single family home. I'll stay in the yard as long as the monitor is with me. I've hung laundry on the line with the monitor in my back pocket. We've also sat out on our patio with the monitor as well.

I will cross the street to get mail and uload the car. If she is napping I'll head outside in the yard to do yardwork etc, especially if her window is open so I can hear her. At night we'll sit in the backyard and relax on the patio, though I'd make sure to have the monitor if I couldn't hear her. I'd even venture as far as our neighbours patio, which is 14" further south of our patio (subdivision living). To me, being in the yard or being in the kitchen is the same as long as I can hear her and she is safe.

We stay in the yard or garage. Mailbox is across the street and ill run there if I have to.

Same as @twoofeverything ... if I can see her with the monitor, I feel totally okay going about chores and such in my house and in the yard. A couple of times I've put my dogs on leashes and walked them up and down the sidewalk in front of my neighbors' homes on either side - but the entire time I'm watching her on my monitor and in view of her nursery window {it faces the front of the house}.

Test out your signal when DH is home so you know your limits and what you're comfortable with. :)

I'm in an apartment and I've left LO in the apartment while I change a load of laundry in the communal laundry room. Honestly, I think it's safer than bringing her with me. When she's with me in a carrier I'm nervous about tripping on the stairs with a laundry basket, hitting her with the laundry basket or hurting her or my back reaching to the bottom of the washer. When I left her I was gone 4 minutes. But DH asked me not to leave her so I won't do it anymore.

I'll still get the mail, get something from the car, or let someone in the complex which are all a trip down a flight of stairs - two flights from her room.

We lived in a townhouse for his first 7.5 months. Our mailbox was at the end of our street, but really only a couple hundred feet, if even. I would walk to the mailbox if he was sleeping. Since the garage was technically in the townhouse, I would definitely do things in there and get things out of the car. I always get a monitor with me.

We live in a three story apartment now, we're on the second floor at the very end of the building. He's a toddler so I am not as paranoid. If he is sleeping I will go down and get the mail/packages in the apt lobby. The monitor doesn't go that far, but it's less than 2 minutes I'm gone.

I wouldn't go out to the car though, since I'm in a big building, I wouldn't leave the building.

I got locked out of the house while babysitting with the young kids inside when I was a teenager, so my limit is more or less, past a locked door :)

Our monitor doesn't reach that far, so I'm pretty much limited to inside the house, but I've gone out on the back patio if they're sleeping a long time....but I only shut the screen, not the glass door!

I've been out in the yard gardening, getting bags from the car....as long as I know I"ll be just in and out f the house quickly, or the monitor still works, I think it's fine. I have friends who walk up to the neighbor's house with the monitor and hang out, and I don't see a problem with that, as long as the kids are in a safe place and the house is locked up. I don't immediately run to the baby as soon as he makes a noise, so I think walking back from the neighbor's house would be perfectly acceptable.

If I have her in the carseat/car and need to run back inside, I only do it if my car is parked in the garage with the door closed...I'd never leave her even for a second in the driveway in my car...That Madeline story haunts me...

I'll go as far as my video monitor signal will let me! I've never tried the mailbox, (it's probably too far), so basically just out to the car/driveway or the backyard. If something were to go wrong or somebody let out a huge wail, I'd want to be able to get to them FAST.
