@raintreebee: less than 3 hours with lo1. I went into labor a month early with lo2 and was completely not expecting it. Not sure what my dr would have me do if I were to have another. He said truly precipitous births like mine are less than 1% of all births!

@matador84: how long was your first labor? What did you do with LO#1? My first was under three hours, and I am terrified now that I'm pregnant with #2. I also live 45 minutes from the hospital.

DS: about 7h from first contraction to baby (5cm to pushing in less than 1h; 41w +2)

DD: about 14h from first very mild contraction to baby (less than 20min from 4cm to baby; 38w+4)

So both slower and faster the second time.

This thread is making me both excited and nervous! My induced labour with DS1 was 14 hours from when they gave me the cervical gel to when he was in my arms. I am definitely up for something quicker this time round, but not too quick!!

First baby - irregular contractions started Friday after a S&S, hospital early Sunday morning, baby born 12.40am Tuesday.
Second baby - woken by 3yo at 2.30am and while trying to go back to sleep realised I was having contractions, hospital at 8am, born 11.08am. Midwife calls it as 6hours of established labour. (Took about a week to believe how quick it all happened!)

DS #1: 14 hours start to finish
DS #2: 8 hours start to finish. I woke up like a normal day, just happened to be Memorial Day. I didn't feel great, but still got the eldest up and ready to go to bouncy castle. While there for a couple of hours, the contractions got stronger, but not regular.

On the advice of the on call doc, we went home and got our eldest's care in order. After that, we left for the hospital. I had GBS, so they pushed the meds and waited. J would have been born hours earlier, but they wanted a dose of antibiotics accounted for first. J broke the water bag while waiting. Soon after the 4 hour antibiotic mark hit, they started delivery. He was born 10 minutes later. Crazy fast.

I have not been in labor before but am now at 37 weeks with #3 and you ladies are freaking me out :)

I will tell you - my sister's first labor was probably 14-16 hours, for her second she arrived at the hospital 3-4 hr after contractions started and started pushing right away, for her third it was even faster. My SIL had a very quick labor with her first, likely 2-4 hours, but it was slightly longer with her second, started feeling contractions around 7pm and he was born just after midnight.

@skipra: with C we drive to the hospital at 2:30 am, so no traffic, but they were doing construction on our exit on 93 and we had to take all these back roads detours! It was awful. This time we are not taking 93 at all!

In total from first contraction about 28 hours. But I would say no more than 2 hours was active labor. I went from 4 cm and contractions 10-12 min apart (but painful) to baby in my arms in under 2 hours.
I can't really compare to my first because I was induced but going from 6 cm to baby was very fast too.

@travellingbee: exactly- shorter but not too short! I'll have bags packed for me and C well ahead of time (I hope) and plan to put our potential child care people on notice after 37 weeks just in case. And I won't ignore any possible contractions or signs- won't head straight to the hospital but will call BIL or my friend and give them notice that it might be happening.

Yikes!!! I just have 1 baby (DS 1 month old) but we would like to have a second and I am worried about a super crazy fast delivery!

With DS I had preterm labor for months. The morning I finally had him, I woke up about 6:30am thinking "oh these contractions feel different" and "is that my normal discharge or did my water break?" So I ate some cereal and took a shower. By the time I was out of the shower around 6:50, I was having serious ctx every 2-3 mins in a lot of pain. Got to the hospital around 8:45 am - had him at 1:08 pm. (And that was with about 1.5 hours of "laboring down" after I got my epi!) There is no way I could have mistaken it for not real labor though - the pain was OUT OF CONTROL immediately, my ctx were on top of each other with no break.

My second had me wake up at about 730, felt mildy uncomfortable but didn't think it was labour. Got to the hospital around 830 and she was born about 15 minutes later. It was fast.

Six hours start to finish. I got up at 2:30 am to use the bathroom, came back to bed and felt like I peed myself followed immediately by a massive contraction. That was my water breaking obviously - DD2 was in my arms at 8:30 am that same morning.

Labour with DD1 started on a Wednesday at lunchtime with super, super mild contractions, fairly spaced out, and gradually increased throughout the night until I knew it was proper labour by about 4:00 am Thursday morning. DD1 was born at 9:26 pm Thursday night, but I'd say I was only in real labour for about 17 hours.

This is both freaking me out and exciting me! My first labor was 11 hours from when I first realized it was really happening. Before that I had some disorganized contractions for a few hours but nothing that made me think "this is it". It'd be great if the next one is shorter but not TOO short!

dd - water broke early in the morning, had her 10 hours later
ds - light contractions started around dinner time, had him 9 hours later.

to do a better comparison though, it took 5 hrs from 7cm to delivery for my first, 45 min with my second. so alot faster from that point!
