@Cherrybee: Funny you saty that, the niece I talked about in my previous post? She is now 6 with still inconsistent sleep, whereas her 2 year old sister has been sleeping through since she was 6 months old! You never know! x

@Cherrybee: That's really hard. It seems like she really may never STTN until you change something, though. My brother was a really bad sleeper and my mom got up with him until I think he was 3 or 4 because we had a lot of turmoil at that time and she felt bad. To this day he is an insomniac. Not trying to scare you but I think you would be helping her in the long run if you are able to get her to sleep even if that means not going to her. You're the mama, though!

@Anagram: Those kind of wake ups are the worst  We can usually get E straight back to sleep with a little drink of milk, but the nights when that doesn't work are BRUTAL.

@Cherrybee: it's the same with us. LO1 woke up at 4:40 am SCREAMING and would not.go.back.to.sleep. And we can let her stay in her room alone, screaming, but we live in a small place and no one will sleep if she's screaming and she'll wake the baby, so of course we go to her.

Not that it helped today. She still screamed for almost 20 minutes straight. And then refused to go back to bed. A night terror maybe? I have no clue. I just know I'm tired.

@daniellemybelle: I know I've created this... but I cant bear the thought of her ever not thinking that mummy will come if she really needs me. And there's always a reason - sickness, teething etc. I've just picked her up from nursery and they said she's been really sad all day today. I looked at her and her cheek is bright red, so that explains last night. But then, by the same token, there's ALWAYS something wrong with this kid. She never just has a sniffle, colds always give her a temperature and a horrid night cough. She never just gets a tooth, she has alllll the symptoms over several weeks. I had made my peace with not sleep training meaning she would STTN late, but this is just ridiculous!

@Cherrybee: That's really hard  This is just my opinion but I think as long as you keep going in, she knows that you will and she will continue to wake up and ask for you. If I were in your place, I would talk to her about it and let her know you are done coming in her room at night. There doesn't need to be a reason ("because you're a big girl") - I would tell her you just know she can sleep all night in her bed. And then be consistent. She'll be okay! That's my advice.

@ScarletBegonia: Thank you. They're great ideas. E is always really proud in the morning when she sleeps through but she's too needy in the moment to make a different choice. I know I've indulged it and created my own problem. I am going to get the new sibling thing out of the way before I try to change it - I don't want "being a big girl" to equal "mummy no longer comes to you when you need her" - and then I will implement your chart idea I think.

@Cherrybee: thats rough :( Could you try a reward chart with her? She gets a sticker for every time she "sleeps through"/if she wakes up, doesn't get you up? And maybe if she has milk before bed, try and reinforce as much as possible for her that big girls have their milk before bed, not in the nighttime...my sister went through a very similar thing with my niece and she left a bottle of water with her in bed that she could drink through the night, and the reward chart was tacked up opposite her bed with glow in the dark stickers, as a reminder. It didn't work all the time but she went from waking up every night to only 1 night-ish a week.
Good luck - I hope tonight is better x

Okay, so there's my answer. I'm feeling pretty sorry for myself right now. :bummed:

E was up once last night, at 4am. We left her at first and she went back to sleep for about 10 minutes, but then she woke again and got a bit more distressed so I went in. She said she needed milk and medicine. I know from experience that I I don't give her a cup of milk when she asks (try water, for example), she will cry until she's sick and nobody gets any sleep, so I gave her the milk and she went straight off again.

I guess my almost 3 year old doesn't STTN then.

I wouldn't consider it consistently sttn if little things are waking them up every couple days.

My 3yo has only waken up about maybe 10 times since 8weeks old. She sleeps through colds/teething/coughs/fevers/minor illnesses (even vomit 😬). She's woken up bc of diarrhea and once in awhile if she loses her lovey, which is pretty rare.

My 1.5yo has woken up more but probably about 10 times since 8 weeks. He woke up a lot due to his first set of molars and his bad coughs. But he sleeps through colds/most teething/fevers.

DD started STTN most nights when we night weaned around 15 months. Then when we completely weaned at 18 months she started STTN solidly. Now at 23 mos she is still STTN, but does have a night every few weeks where she'll wake up once and we need to go in and hold her for a few mins, but those are pretty rare.

LO 1 is 4 and her sleep is very consistent. She woke up twice last year when she was stomach bug sick. She doesn't usually wake from coughing, colds, etc.

LO 2 isn't as consistent and sometimes she wakes up about 1-2 times every few months and when she coughs a lot. There was a stretch last summer when she woke up about 1-2 a week but that was only for a few weeks.

DD is 23 months tomorrow, and she started STTN when we weaned at 14 months, then stopped at 18 months. We sleep trained at 19ish months, and things were great for a while. Then winter hit, and sickness and things have screwed with us for at least a month. We are going on week 3 of crap sleep from sickness, teeth, and now who the hell knows what. She's currently screaming in her bed TWO HOURS after we started bedtime, and she's been in with us every night for what feels like forever. I'm over it, but it doesn't seem like it's going away any time soon, unfortunately. Our problem now is that co-sleeping used to solve our problems, but now it doesn't.

All that to say, I don't know the answer to your question, but I feel you!! I think some kids just don't have super predictable sleep, unfortunately.

We had gotten to a point where LO maybe woke only every 10 days or so, but now at 2.5 we are dealing with what @winniebee: describes with potty training. She started waking to go at least once a night, we're about 2 weeks in to the nighttime pottying. I should start my own thread but when will this end....

LO was 18 mo when she started STTN and she only wakes if she throws up. But, she was done all her teething before 2 yo and I think that helped a lot. The other thing is she loves her bed. She's only allowed in the crib to sleep and she loves to cuddle up with her stuffed animals underneath her blanket. So, I imagine that even if she wakes she's happy to be there. And not every kid is like that. Yours might loooooove your company. :)

LO is 2.5 and I don't remember the last time she woke up in the middle of the night. It's usually only if she's sick.

ETA: I wouldn't really consider it STTN if she was still waking multiple times a week.

DS, who is 18 months, STTN (knock on wood) and has since about 8.5-9 months. In that time, I can count on one hand the times he has woken up in the MOTN - all due to legit illness like stomach flu (like, this week!) or something along those lines. (I will say that he doesn't get particularly affected by teething and we are generous with the ibuprofen when he is teething!)

I guess we are lucky because mine (2.5 years) doesn't ever wake at night unless she is sick or teething. She started STTN at 10 months and she did wake every so often back then but she's been rock solid for at least a year, I think.

Both of my twins have gone from sleeping through with barely a peep to waking up multiple times in the night needing water, hug, etc, as well as waking up close to an hour earlier than they used to. No idea why but I'm SO over it!

My 2 year old has been sttn since 15 months but she still wakes once a night probably 1-3 times a week.
