I love what I do, I work with great people, and we have a pretty relaxed atmosphere. It's a government job, so we don't have a lot of perks like sponsored parties, but we do nice things for each other and feel like our work is valuable! We also have a lot of opportunities to be creative. My favorite school was one where we'd all wear tutus on Tuesday and we had a "Pranks on Friday" committee and a coffee bar once a month. The teachers regularly went for happy hour or random potlucks. We have a game room on campus, though it's far from where I am. We have hackathons 2x/year, which are fun and creative. Our theme for the next one is the 90's, so they showed the movie "Hackers" in the caf for 2 hours yesterday. We have Friday afternoon happy hours with free beer, random parties for stuff, and various outings. There's also a classic video game console in one area, and a giant box of legos. It's kind of a work hard/play hard environment with lots of off the wall people. I bill all my time so I can't really goof off for an hour for a Wii tournament. We also work in a professional field so it wouldn't look very good of a client came into the office and people were playing video games! That being said, I do have fun at work. I laugh and joke with my coworkers and fit well into the firm culture. I think that is really important. They work really hard to only bring in people who would be a good fit with all of us so it's an office of really great friends. Frequently have beer on stressful days or Fridays and usually a fun outside of office activity once a quarter. It's a very small but growing company so for now it's pretty laid back. We also have an annual company offsite where the entire company meets up in a tropical location for four days. We theoretically expect employees to work 50 hours weeks, but I usually log 40 plus the occasional evening/weekend email check. Actually that's not true! Since it's a children's hospital, most of the people love kids and it shows. At the time I didn't feel that way. I work for a welfare office, and it's not really a happy place. But I work with my friends, so that helps a lot. And my department likes to celebrate...someone brings in donuts or cookies or something at least once a week, and we'll use any excuse to throw a luncheon. The office as a whole has the occasional fun thing...we do big fundraising drives for charity in the late summer/fall. Last year it was carnival themed, and they sold popcorn every day, had a tailgating party, cute pet contest, and one day they set up a dunk tank and sold popcorn and sno-cones. Overall the office itself is pretty stodgy, with a ton of rules (we can get "talked to" about wearing sneakers, for example). D's company does a lot of really fun things, though! Bowling parties and cookouts and company parties every quarter or so, family bike rides, craft beer swaps, "bike throws" for charity (literally throwing bikes...he works for a cycling company). We watch trashy tv together every day at lunch, celebrate all occasions (and "just for fun" occasions), bring in treats for one another, laugh a lot, goof off way more than we should, email/text funny pictures all day long - I work as a psychologist in the field of child maltreatment, so we NEED it. DH sometimes wonder how much work we actually do because all he hears are the funny stories, but I don't share the horrid stories of abuse and neglect we deal with on a daily basis. Most people can't handle what we do, and sometimes, we struggle with it as well.
