I use a knot genie, but she has such sensitive hair that she doesn't let anyone touch it!
I try to be really gentle and also use a detangler too.

I would be so gentle.

I start at the bottom and use my fingers then a natural bristle brush then a paddle brush if needed.

It helps if you hold her hair in a ponytail, tightly, and brush the knots of out the pony tail (start bottom, brush those knots down and out, then a little higher, etc til all smooth). By holding her hair it doesn't pull her scalp! Once the majority of the knots are out it makes brushing the roots much easier.

Not enough hair on either of my boys to tangle, but I use the wetbrush on my own hair after learning about it while watching my little cousins :)

@mrbee: DH's niece's hair are both very fine and tangly. Their mom tried alll types of detangler and brushes. She swears by the knot genie and i have to say when they were here over the holidays it is sooo much easier to brush their hair with the knot genie!

Cs hair is curly and it gets super ratty in the back. I just use a little spray and one of those little detangler brushes that fits in your palm. Easy peasy and she doesnt complain usually.

@mrbee: do you use a conditioner?

Chloe's hair definitely still tangled, but not nearly as bad as when we still washed her hair with Johnson and Johnson.

I shampoo her hair with Organix brand shampoo, and a dab of conditioner on the ends (neck down, not on the crown). Then I use a paddle brush after we get out of the bath, and again in the morning. I wet the paddle brush too before combing her dry hair!

@mrbee: Hmm. It looks like it but the paddle brush is ginormous! I have brushes similar to the Wetbrush, but the huge paddle one works so much better on DD's hair. It's like trumpets playing in the background when I first tried it  They're cheap, too!

I'm very gentle; in large part because I can still clearly remember the times that my mom was not very gentle with my tangles! My method is detangler with a large tooth comb, and then a small tooth comb or brush; the entire time I hold her hair tight and brush up from the ends so she doesn't feel much pulling.

@SugarplumsMom: Oh oops, I misread wide-tooth comb as wide brush!

After I do some finger detangling, then I switch to the Wetbrush here and use that with lots of conditioner:

Is the Webrush similar to a paddle brush?

@mrbee: I used to do all of that, too. On really bad days, I'd have to wet her hair first. But for us, the paddle brush is not only faster, but a lot more painless for DD. That thing is bigger than her head!

<< It's a process that always begins with finger detangling, followed by a wide-tooth comb, followed by a smaller comb if needed. >>

@mrsjazz: That's our process too! Man it takes forever though in the summer, with all that extra sweat tangling the hair....

My nieces's hair was always a mess and it would take me 15 minutes to brush it out! It was really fine, so it would basically get tangled again as soon as I finished unless I put it up. Ugh. Drove me nuts, lol.

I would try to be gentle, but she would get fussy no matter what, so I ended up just trying to do it as fast as I could.

This looks awesome: http://www.amazon.com/Tangle-Teezer-O-HH-010210-Original-Pink/dp/B00264NW7G/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1400371946&sr=8-4&keywords=detangler+brush

DD's hair is kind of special in that it ALWAYS turns into a tangled mess as soon as she wakes up. It doesn't matter what it looked like the night before. I found the large paddle brushes work best with her. It comes right out, but then again, her hair isn't that long to begin with.

Eta: I'm not very gentle.

I try to be gentle, but our daughter's hair becomes such a rat's nest! I have to comb her hair with my fingers and a brush for 10-15 minutes, and then later on Bee uses a detangler spray and another brush to complete the process.

Our daughter is pretty stoic, although towards the end of the process she lets us know she doesn't want to do it any more! I'm wondering if maybe I should be more gentle and just take more time... or maybe we should start washing her hair every day. Or we could give her a haircut!
