The day care that we found does date night once a month. For a small fee, they will keep our LO from 6pm-2am so that we can go out. I love that!

We have family nearby, but DD is 6 months old now and we still haven't gone anywhere just us. I don't think I'm quite ready to leave her with family like that yet.....

For us, it's hard. We previously lived 16 hours away from family and didn't know anyone well enough to watch LO. Now, we live completely across the country but we're hoping to find someone that we can trust with DS. I think date nights are totally realistic with family close by. It just isn't that way for us.

If you have help, it's not that difficult to get away for an hour or two. I don't think the expectations are unrealistic, but yeah, I had the same ones and we've yet to do any.

Honestly, I really miss my alone time with DH! But we have 2 LO's. With 1, my parents made sure to offer to babysit once every two weeks. Now we're kind of on our own.

Those don't sound like unrealistic expectations...but the vacation might be hard. It's just hard to leave LO's over night and to get someone who is willing to watch them that much.

It was tough the first few months when DD was up every few hours and we were both sleep deprived but it's gotten a lot better! Even during those first few months we'd always try to eat dinner together. Most times we catch up on our days and talk about how much we love DD (I know, which saps lol) but sometimes we eat in silence and enjoy that too! DD is in bed by 730 most nights so we have our own time practically everyday. It's usually dinner, hang out in living room watching tv together or doing out own thing, then nap until I get up for midnight pump while DH does dinner dishes. At almost 7 months, I'd say we have gotten into a groove now. My parents are also only 10 minutes away and they help watch her on our occasional date days or events (weddings or something) that aren't kid friendly.

@highwire: DH and I used to co-commute too! We loved chatting on the way home from work and debrief our workday so when we got home we would call "no more work talk". I'm worried about co-commuting if there is an emergency and we need to get to LO, I want to have my car with me so he doesn't have t o leave work to......

It might not happen in the first couple months if you are BF but after that I think it's totally realistic if you have family in town!

It's not unrealistic, but your priorities might change. DH works so much that when he's home he wants to spend time with LO as much as possible, so dropping her off to go out together sometimes makes him a little sad. We like to try and do as much as possible together as a family.

I think I am going to really cherish our co-commute once LO has arrived. It will be 45 minutes in the morning and the evening to talk to each other uninterrupted in the car each day. I think it will help keep us close.

Our parents all live in town so I don't think it'll be a huge problem. We plan on having a date night once a month. We'll see how realistic that is when baby gets here!

My parents only live 45 mins away so they have already when warned once a month, min., they are babysitting so we can have date night. Since DH travels during the week, our weekends is our only time together.

I think it's totally realistic. Especially since you have family close by!
DH and I never felt comfortable and never wanted to leave our LO for long. I don't think we'll ever take a trip without the kids. If anything, we'll take grandparents or someone with us to watch the kids so we can go out for dinner, etc.

those are good goals to have in place!!

It is hard for us to have special time together. But now that DS is sleeping better, from 630pm on, it's a little easier the nights DH is actually home.

We've only had one date since he was born... oops!! I'm hoping for another one in September for my birthday!

My mom loves to babysit, but she doesn't have the greatest health, so it all depends on how she is feeling. She's the only family in the area who would/could babysit

since we have both parents 20 min away, dh and i made a pact that we'd do monthly date nights, weekly nightcaps, and an annual adults only vacation.

we're having our first LO in november, so we have high (un)realistic? hopes? :P
