LO transitioned well. She has been in preschool with short hours from 2 years old. The big change was that she either crashed out afterschool or was very hungry immediately after. They have lunch around 10:30.

Dropping all naps was challenging. She was still napping fairly routinely. It was a fairly smooth transition for us, but I credit that to the Pre-K program we did. The transition from daycare to Pre-K was a little more challenging.

She likes it, seems to be learning and doing well.

I don't think it's enough physical activity / outside time for her. She comes home super tired and hungry but needs to run around a lot. It's a mix of mental fatigue but need to run, but she's over tired so there's always the loom of a meltdown happening. So I still feel like we're adjusting, she hadn't been throwing tantrums in awhile prior to school but now they're occurring regularly after school (luckily not during).

We are mostly OK now but the first few weeks were rough. DS was only in a 3-day 9-2 play-based preschool last year so going to a 7:45-2:45 academic program 5 days a week was a big leap. He's also one of the youngest, so not quite as up on his fine motor especially. That said, he's gotten much better, and it's amazing how fast he's starting to read.

He definitely gets tired. Once Thursday rolls around he always seems so annoyed that he has two more days until the weekend.

Sounds silly but the hardest part for DD is the loss of an afternoon snack - she is STARVING when she gets home and therefore very whiney - she pretty much eats dinner at 4pm and then a snack when we eat at 5:30.

Well, my son was in a 5s program last year, it was play based and only 4 hours, 5 days a week. I can count on one hand the amount of worksheets that he brought home in the entire year. They had a ton of time outdoors on the grounds of a nature center.

Now, he's doing a lot more academic work and the day is 6 hours long. He has to sit for long periods and only gets 20 minutes of recess. He's much more tired and gets easily frustrated during the period between dinner and bedtime.

It was pretty seamless for us. My son had been in full day daycare since age 2, so the schedule wasn't much of a change. Elementary is a lot more rigorous (homework and lots of sitting down) but he's doing well and really likes it.

For those of you who have Kindergartners, how has the transition to K been for your child?

DS1 has been going to daycare/school his whole life, so he is definitely accustomed to the routine, but I'll still be a little worried about his transition. He currently goes 5 days to a Montessori Jr. K and I'm hoping that the 5 day schedule this year helps him with the transition to public school in the fall.
