I talk to my mom almost every day and try to make a trip there about once a month. DH's parents live about 5-10 min away, we have them over for dinner (and vice versa) about once, sometimes twice a week. We see them 2-3x a year. Other nights I call them on my drive home (my commute is all of 10-15mins, so quick calls). Sometimes my mom & I go shopping or take a class or something. I text my dad maybe once a wk. I talk to them on the phone about every other day and see my mom maybe once every week or two, and my dad once every 2-3 weeks or so, on average. We don't have kids, but I imagine I'd be seeing them more if we did. DH's parents live 1.5 hours away (by car), so we have to make more of an effort to see them. Our niece lives with them, so we're down there to see her (and them) maybe once every 4-6 weeks or so. More often than that, recently, due to some family issues. Same with DH's, we usually see both sets once a week, if not for sure every 2 weeks. If we talked once a month, it was a lot. This was before email and texting. Things continued like this for a long time, I would call once a week. We'd talk, I'd go home once a month maybe. Then I moved abroad. When I was home on maternity leave, I began calling daily, and now I see her every single day. So, yeah, things changed! DH talks to his family a lot more regularly, but they don't see each other as often (even though they live closer). Now she watches DS every day, so, I see her every day. My mom watches DS while we're working too. :) Needless to say we have daily communication with them. That had a big impact on day-to-day communications (phone calls become a lot harder!), but we still kept in very close touch over email and texts. They would visit me pretty regularly in New York too. In the last five years or so though, my parents started a business (a bed and breakfast) and that's kept them really busy. Plus their internet isn't fast enough to support stuff like Skype. So we've been making it a point to visit them for a few weeks every August. It's good to see them, plus they get to spend time with their grandkids. How have you kept in touch with your parents over the years?
