I grew up eating boxed meals (hamburger helper etc) and canned foods (spaghetti-os, corn, etc). Salad = iceberg + loads of ranch. EVERYTHING was doused in ketchup (my favorite snack as a kid was a slice of American cheese + ketchup!! )

Now DH and I don't keep anything boxed, canned or processed in our house (with the exception of bread, pasta and tortillas). I'll still eat the stuff at someone else's house, but it's so rare that I don't feel too guilty about it. I am definitely MUCH healthier

They've definitely changed since college. My dad's a really good cook, so growing up I ate pretty well. In college I had lots of the typical stuff--Ramen, boxed mac n cheese, etc. I still eat processed food, but I do try and be mindful of it. I don't restrict myself and I rarely feel guilty about eating something unless I've just really gorged myself. I do not feel guilty about eating a sandwich...hell, I eat one almost every day at work! I enjoy food. I enjoy going out to restaurants and trying different things. I do the best I can to eat more healthy meals than unhealthy ones. But I think healthy eating also includes not being too restrictive or hard on yourself.

I grew up on the Mediterranean diet (not diet, but you know what I mean). There was no such thing as processed food in our house, my mother cooked everything we ate from scratch. We ate wild caught salmon before it was the rage and we had chickens for fresh eggs at one point.

Then I grew up, went to college, got a job and discovered restaurants. I ate out a lot and realized that there were whole other food cultures out there and I began to teach myself how to cook in those cultures.

Basically, I adore food. There are so many interesting things to eat that I would never cut anything out unless I had an intolerance or allergy. I still cook most things from scratch, but I am not opposed to some convenience items now and again, especially during the work week.

I can't eat certain types of food like I could when I was younger without feeling bad. A waffle cone with ice cream, for example, would wreck me these days, so when I do have it, I eat just one scoop. Same with fried foods. I'm a big believer in "everything in moderation" and as long as I'm sticking to that, I don't usually feel guilty about what I eat.

Growing up it was Ramen noodles (the .88 cent kind) & cans of veggies for a while. Once my dad got a better job we had better ish foods but most of it was still very very processed. Then I started calorie counting for a while, still eating mostly crap. Now I stick to whole foods. I don't believe that cutting out entire food groups is god for everyone ( some though!) but I have drastically cut my dairy & grain intake, stick to protien & veggies, I have cut most/all added sweeteners (even honey). Of course there are occasions when I'm our or whatever just eat whatever there is but on the whole this is how I eat

Yes, for sure. I became vegetarian when I was nine. (Ethical reasons) But back then, my parents I guess didn't know enough to make sure my diet was really well-rounded. Oh, Little Debbies in my lunch? Yes please. lol

I didn't really start eating "healthy" til after DH and I got married. He keeps on me about making sure I get all that I need, and of course now with TTC/IF I'm trying to be as healthy as possible. I made the switch to vegan in Dec. But as anyone who follows me on IG knows, that in no way means I eat healthy all the time! (Vegan cupcakes anyone?)

Back in the day, I too bought everything "fat free/light." And always drank diet soda. Now, I only have soda once a week or so, and I drink the real stuff. I'm more concerned about chemicals and stuff like that now.

I still am not as healthy as I could be. (Obviously.) I'm convinced there's something wrong with me. I always feel bloated after I eat, and I just got my iron retested, and everything is low! I don't know how that's possible b/c I take a prenatal, a fertility blend AND an Iron supplement.

Mine hasn't really changed at all. I've always tried to eat healthy and think I'm at a good balance of healthy without trying to go nuts and be too restrictive. I'm sure it could be better, but I've maintained my weight +/- 5 lbs for the last 15+ years, so I think it works for me.

@Rainbow Sprinkles: I know! I am now a dietitian so food has always been a "thing" for me. Yes, plant based is technically vegan but I don't consider myself vegan because I do eat meat and cheese very occasionally and I just don't live a vegan lifestyle :)

I eat *much* healthier and cleaner than I ever used to. I used to eat a lot of fast food or thought that eating healthy simply met not having a second plate, then it meant "light" food and lean cuisine and low carb/low sugar, etc or just eating so little, but then i was hungry all the time. Oh but i was "on a diet". Sigh.. We used to eat out a lot, now it's a rare treat.

Now i feel much more educated (and STILL feel like I come up short and have more to know) and try to utilize the building blocks of food to fuel my specific goals. As a very active weight lifter, I need more protein than most other women. I stay away from boxed stuff most of the time and just try to stick to the basics for the most part. I stopped snacking, too. I don't really eat a bag of chips or popcorn or feel like I have the munchies like I used to. I used to be a BIG snacker!

My eating habits are constantly evolving! Ha!

When I was younger I ate really unhealthily. I'd just cut calories to lose weight when I wanted, etc. As I've gotten older I've tried sooo many different "diets"...usually when they're on trend. I'm a sheep lol.

Lately though (like in the past month HA) I've been trying to develop a better relationship with food. I've been focusing less on restriction/cutting out complete food groups and more on quality. Like. making more things from scratch, etc. Moderation is a big problem for me (always has been) so I'm trying to teach it to myself!

@KelLeeLeee: Oh wow, you've had a lot of change!!!!

So, does plant-based mean vegan? Mostly veggies, fruit, and beans, and nuts?

@mrsjazz: Oh, yes, that's another thing that has changed here, too. My DH and DD have all full-fat dairy. No low-fat yogurt, sour cream, etc.

5 years ago, I bought everything "light."

I grew up eating hamburger helper, lots of snack food and once in a while an iceberg salad with ranch dressing. Then I became vegetarian, then vegan, then a regular eater, then severely restricted caloric intake, then paleo, then normal, and now plant based :) pretty sure I will stay this way.

I eat healthier on the whole...but I still have all the bad stuff I used to have, sometimes in moderation, sometimes not (stress eater here!).

But we did make some changes at home years ago that have helped: we don't drink soda or juice at home, we eat less meat, and more beans and greens. I cook at home more and eat less processed foods. I use healthier oils and full fat.

But I will still go grab a Big Mac when I'm stressed or pop a frozen pizza in the oven when it's been a busy week. I just do these things less than I did years ago.

I will never give up bread! There is no sin in bread to me--just in eating it all the time.

I definitely have more knowledge on what is actually healthy than I used to. When I used to "go on a diet" I would basically just barely eat some moderately bad stuff.

I used to think that eating a sandwich with cheese, meat, and lots of veggies on it was a "healthy meal." (oh, this isn't fried? it' definitely healthy.)

Now, I feel immense guilt when I eat a sandwich because I feel like the bread is such a sin.

I think this stems from having to be on a strict elimination diet for LO, but also the paleo/whole30/glute-free lifestyles that have become quite the norm.

Now, I really try to avoid wheat.

ETA: I also avoid dairy and soy, while focusing on lots of plants (especially green ones) and generally just eating "real foods." Full fat, no processed foods, little sugar, etc. I used to eat fast food a LOT and that has drastically changed.
