I prefer our Lazy Boy recliner, gliders aren't as comfy as that bad boy is! But we have a ranch style house, so I don't have stairs to deal with to go use it.

We have a recliner and yes, I would die without it! DS was only in our room for two weeks. We would have kept him there longer, but he is a very noisy sleeper and I woke up at every noise he made. I tried nursing in bed and on the couch, but DS nurses best in the recliner. It's comfortable enough to sleep in. We got the Best HF/Storytime Series Tryp.
http://www.besthf.com/best/Storytime/Recliners/items/TRYP

ETA: I wasn't sure how we were going to fit it in the nursery, but we ended up putting it angled in a corner next to the dresser. It sticks out a little, but it's worth it!

We have a poang rocker, and i am glad we didnt spend a lot, even though i was initially drawn to one that cost $800!

In the beginning i usually nursed in bed or the rocker, or in the living room where the tv was. I didnt need the rocker for rocking her because she disliked it. She screamed as soon as i sat down! It was maybe around the 5-6 month mark that i used it more often.

We just have an ikea chair and its fine. I think you just need a comfy space to sit. I didn't like any of the gliders we could afford, and all the nice looking ones were way too expensive (in my opinion)

I used to nurse in the glider, but I prefer the bed or couch now. LO is so long that he doesn't fit in the glider on the boppy anymore.
I plan to revisit it more when LO is bigger and we can sit in it for bedtime stories.

I thought most gliders were hideous and was trying to get just a comfy recliner used. I the end we bought the babyletto one from babies r us and I'm so glad we did because I use it every night for her middle of the night feeding. It was on sale for $300 and is pretty small.

We bought a glider and it's been a lifesaver - we've definitely gotten our use of it as we use it every single day. It's in our living room though, not the nursery and if it were in the nursery it probably wouldn't be that functional for us. We feed in the glider, calm LO in the glider, etc. LO had a super bad head cold and could not get to sleep laying down (even at an elevated angle) and the only way to get her to sleep was holding her upright. Doing that in the glider was so much more comfortable than trying to get comfortable on the sofa or a regular easy chair. LO and I slept in the glider; it's size was perfect for us to snuggle and feel secure.

our kids slept in their cribs from day one and you definitely need a seat of some kind in the nursery. there will be many a night when you're rocking your lo, and the glider for me is a must. i still use it multiple times a day (olive is almost 15 months old). it's been through 2 kids and was well worth every last penny!

if you are low on space, have you considered a mini crib? We are trying to conserve space & I was pretty happy when I discovered them. I'm not sure it would make up all the space you need, but its a start

I have spent literally hundreds of hours in my glider with our fussy, colicky baby. Even now at 22mo we sit and rock in it a lot, bc DD usually wakes up cranky after her nap. I'd probably get rid of the low dresser if space is at a premium. You can just change the baby on the floor or on your bed.

We have one of the Ikea Poang chairs, that kind of bounce instead of rock. It takes up a smaller footprint in the room than a glider would, and it works just fine. A glider would probably be easier for rocking to sleep while I'm tired myself, but we've never had a problem with just using our chair.

@JoJoGirl: Yeah, I posted about a gliding ottoman awhile back and it seems unnecessary, especially in a tight space. A lot of moms said something stationary or a foot rest was perfectly fine. We just got it because I got a killer deal on the set. I think your set-up like that would be fine!

I don't have practical experience yet, but this was a must item for me because I don't plan on nursing in the bedroom.
From a lot of threads I've read, it seems like a comfortable rocker/glider is a big deal, especially early on. But I understand about space issue though... I just got mine yesterday and it is on the smaller side of gliders I'd been looking at. Once it was in the room with the gliding motion space & the matching gliding ottoman (I think that's unnecessary though), it takes up a lot more space than I had anticipated. In pictures or in your head, you just think of the non-moving space it occupies, but in reality, you need to give it space to move and not hit the wall or other furniture.
That said, I'm already SO pleased that we have the glider chair because I know it will get used a ton and it's super comfy! I just want to sit in it all the time already!

We are in the process of looking at furniture for the nursery and space is at a premium. I actually whipped out the tape measure last night and THINK we'll be able to do the crib, a 6-drawer long dresser with changing pad on top, and a tall 5-drawer bureau (no closet space for LO really). This leaves little space for a glider, but we should be able to squeeze it into the corner between the crib and narrower dresser if we really need to.

I initially felt like having one was a non-negotiable, but upon further thought last night, I'm not so sure. We'll have LO in our room in a bassinet for the first 12 weeks or so and I'll likely nurse in bed at night, and probably on the couch watching TV during the day. I see it coming in most handy when LO moves to his/her own room and I can go in there to nurse without waking up DH. There's nowhere else to sit or lay down in the nursery, hence my original assumption we'd need it. And I certainly don't want to trudge downstairs 3-4 times/night to sit on the couch!

Did you guys find it to be necessary?
