It would be super important to me. MIL lives in a "smoke free" apartment building and I have to hold my breath when I walk down her hall because there's one tenant who doesn't care, and I guess the landlord doesn't care. I can't even imagine if it was legal!!

It's so nice! Our first apartment reeked of smoke in the bathroom only (WTF) because our downstairs neighbor had lived there for years and was a heavy smoker. Every other apartment was non-smoking and t made such a difference in our quality of life.

We are living in our very first smoke free community and it is truly amazing!! You aren't allowed to smoke inside, outside on porches, or within a 10 feet of a residence door here. I didn't even realize how much our neighbors smoking outside affected the carpets, etc until we moved. I also love being able to walk out my front door and not running into a cloud of smoke. I have a toddler and am currently pregnant, so it is worth it to me.

It's important to me. I once lived in a building that was supposed to be smoke free, but the landlord didn't enforce it. The smell of tobacco and pot just overwhelmed our extra bedroom so it was unusable. I have asthma so it really sucked. I hope you're able to find something, especially with your kids.

I was actually going to suggest the opposite as @LCTBQE - a really big complex that would be more likely to have security to enforce no-smoking-inside rules, offer to move you to a different apartment if there's an issue, etc. Neighbors are such a crap shoot! In apartments as well as houses. Other people, ugh ;-)

ugh, 1. who on earth still smokes and 2. what kind of animal do you have to be to smoke in your apartment? not sure if they're impossible to find in your area, but could you consider a smaller building with only 4 apartments, or a duplex or something?

Never heard of smoke free buildings, I didn't even know they exist. We've dealt with smoking neighbours and it's gross, and there's not much you can do if they're smoking in their apartment. Thankfully when it was really bad (smoke coming into our bathroom and getting everywhere) building management did ask the neighbor to take it outside... but they didn't have to. So if you can find a smoke free building, go for it!

Extremely important. The last time we moved the number one factor was cigarette smoke from the bar below our bedroom. If it hadn't been for that, we could have overlooked the other problems and we probably wouldn't have moved. Where I live, people sometimes smoke in the hallway (it's almost always work crews) and it permeates our place despite having closed windows and doors. I hate it, but at least it's infrequent.

Extremely important to us. One thing I have learned is spend on where you live (within reason), you need to love where you are no matter the length of stay.

Having lived in Europe where it is pretty impossible to find a smoke free building, I'd look at the ventilation system and if the place had carpets. Then I'd make a decision accordingly.

This never even occurred to me to ask. Can you ask around to find out if smoking is really an issue at the places you're interested in? We lived in an apartment for a few months and smoking wasn't an issue. People may have occasionally smoked outside but we could never smell anything inside and it only happened a couple times.

I would look for a family-friendly apartment, maybe a little higher end, with good amenities if possible, and ask if smoking has ever been an issue, if it is an issue whether you could move to a different apartment, etc. I wouldn't necessarily rule it out offhand. But smoking seems to be pretty rare in my area.

For me? Super important. I hate smoke, so I wouldn't be able to deal with hallways, etc. possibly smelling of it. Blech.

We will be moving soon due to a new job and are planning on renting for at least a year while we figure out where we want to buy.

The last time we lived in an apt home, we had problems with ppl living in units around us smoking (legally) in their homes / balconies and the smell wafting into our home. It was annoying but I dealt with it. This time, we have a 4 year old and. Newborn due any day and I don't want to subject them to it.

It's hard to find a non smoking apt bldg but I did find one that's at the very very very upper range of our budget. Its really limiting our search because so many places allow smoking. Am I being too picky in just looking at non smoking buildings? It would definitely allow us more choices if I didn't automatically cross them off my list...
