For sure we like attached - if only for the mere fact of bringing in groceries. Of course the weather piece is a bonus and I assume with kids, that's going to add to the number of trips back and forth to get out the door!

We live in the Northeast and have a detached garage...it hasn't been an issue for us. That being said, we do park in the garage and have a remote car starter for our primary car, which makes a huge difference, especially when you have two little kids to bundle up, etc.

For us it's pretty important since we live in the Northeast so it helps to not have to shovel out two cars!

I live in CA where weather isn't a concern, but we had a detached garage the first 5 months with twins and have had attached ever since. I always take several trips to get everything & everyone out to the car and I feel absolutely fine leaving the twins in the care while I run back inside to get stuff. I did not feel that way with a detached garage. Also for the first year and a half or so, if they fell asleep in the car I'd leave them out there until they woke up--never wake two sleeping babies!

I grew up in a winter climate and I still prefer detached, although it's a non issue for me because we rent. I'm just not a fan of the way attached garages look. Also, it seems like the garage entrance always becomes the regular day to day entrance and I kind of hate traipsing through friends' and family's garages to get to their houses. So I definitely wouldn't spend the money. To each her own though.

I'd say yes, but I wonder how adding an attached garage will change the look of the farm house and how many windows you'll lose adding that big of an addition.

We don't have an attached garage, in fact very very few do here despite the cold and snow. We're not car people so it doesn't bother me at all.

It just depends on how you would use the garage. If you store things that you regularly want access to an attached garage makes sense. Other it's just a nice to have.

We don't park in our attached garage and my husband uses it ad his space to work out. I doubt a rain storm would keep him from his workout if he had to walk out side to get to the garage. For us it wouldn't matter.

When we lived in Denver we did not have an attached garage, and I found it to be a pain. The biggest issue for me was not just it being cold...but one time I slipped really badly on the ice getting to the garage and blacked out and had a concussion. Sure, that could have happen when I walked out the front door with the dog, but just the thought of that happening with my now LO (he wasn't born at the time) would worry me. In addition, all the trips to/from the car would really suck in cold weather (diaper bag, stroller, etc. etc.) I guess the question for me would be whether or not the new estimate was even remotely palatable, or if doing it would mean taking a significant chunk out of the rest of the renovation? A compromise might be to put money aside for a plow/shoveling crew, but if it's your forever house that might end up costing more in the long run. Best of luck with the project-we did a gut renovation on our last home and it was a lot of work! :goodluck:

I've lived several places that had some sort of shed/garage/outbuilding, but never one that was actually intended for parking a car in.

I guess it never occurred to me that it might be important.

@hilsy85: agree about a good mudroom - that makes a huge difference!

I grew up with a detached garage (at street level and home up, so no quick run between garage and house) in Seattle where it rains a lot. Then lived for years in maine with a detached garage. Our home has an attached garage and at this point, it's a deal breaker for me. It's just SO NICE to not have to deal with getting soaking wet, or covered in snow, hauling babies and toddlers to and fro. So I personally would so it now.

I grew up in a house with an enclosed walkway and that was really necessary for living in the very northern US. DH and I bought a house with a dettached garage and lived theee until DD was 1. It was actually fine. We parked right next to the main entrance and would only need a few steps to be in the house.

Now we live in a house with an attached garage and it is easier with a mobile child and another on the way. I would spend the extra money to do it if you are in a cold, snowy climate. The downside for us is that DH fixes cars (he is the family mechanic but not his job) often in the garage and it can be loud in the rest of the house.

I definitely prefer attached, but if you have a detached garage, do you still have a mudroom to enter by? That would be huge! Mudrooms are so important especially if you will be walking through snow and mud on a farm.

Not important to me because we don't park in the garage. We live in a climate that rains a lot, but I guess I'm just used to running in the house with the kids/carting in groceries in the rain! But we use our garage like crazy (store kids' toys, tools, projects, extra freezer), so we definitely need a garage. But it wouldn't be the end of the world for me if it were detached.

I absolutely hate my detached garage. I have one child who will happily sleep in the car or the bike trailer, but who won't transfer in, and the hours of my life that I have spent waiting it out are probably in the thousands. My family also has a big collection of bikes, and I worry a lot about theft. If we buy and renovate this house, we'll add an attached garage, for the bikes at least.

@AmeliaBedilia: so you would build a second garage - this one attached to the house - and still have the original one 150 feet away for storage? I think that's a great idea if it fits in your budget. A covered walkway of that length would not make sense, since it would really need to be fully enclosed to keep out snow and that's a very long distance to enclose.
