The day my water broke (at 40+4) I was less than 1cm dilated and 0% effaced. There is really no telling when it will happen. I don't know what her station was, they never told me. I'm fairly certain she was pretty low though.

I was never told exactly what station she was at but at my 34 week appointment, my doctor checked and told me the baby was incredibly low and that I might not make it to my due date. I was also softening really well and was "very soft" around 37 weeks on. I didn't go into labor until 40 weeks, 4 days though.

@highwire: thank you! I don't know why she made a big deal about H being low if it doesn't really seem like on that scale that she's that low...

@MrsMccarthy: Thank you! That is so helpful & makes me feel better about the induction!

Well the good things about having a low stationed baby are: A, you are way more likely to have no trouble delivering vaginally and it will be very helpful in your having a successful induction, and B, I know in some cases the lower babies can mean your water will break sooner. that effacement is good news too because even if you make it to your induction i have heard with your first baby it's being effaced that is the most important in terms of a smooth delivery and making good progress. Best of luck to you. So excited to see baby Harper.

We learned about this in our childbirth class but I don't really remember all the details.

Found this online:

During the last month, your doctor will estimate how far the baby's head has moved down into (engaged) the pelvis. This is measured in "stations." A baby is at –3 station when the head is above the pelvis and at 0 station when the head is at the bottom of the pelvis (fully engaged). The baby is at +3 station when the head is beginning to emerge from the birth canal (crowning)

I think the head has to be at a 0 station to get you to dilate fully.

@Mrs.B: I know there's no way to tell, I just never hear about station, only dilation and effacement, so I wasn't sure if station was as important as the other two...It was new info that made me wonder! Thank you for sharing your stats! I hope I get to a 0 soon!

There is no way to tell when labor will happen. I was 1cm not effaced and 0 station on a Wed and went into labor at 2am on Sat. I was 38w6d.

I am still only 1cm dilated, and I'm 60% effaced...Dr said my cervix is soft and the baby is very low. She said she's at either a -2 or -1 station.

She made a big deal about H being really low & not thinking I'd go to my DD (Dec 7), but I asked if she thought I would make it to my induction (Dec 2), and she said there's no way to know. Gah!

I'd love to go into labor and not have to be induced...So of course this "station" info gave me some hope & I'm wondering how important that is in relation to when the baby will decide to get this party started. When she hits 0, does labor start? How does station factor into all this business?
