@lovehoneybee: Same here! There is actually a farm store next to DD's daycare that grows food across the street from our housing plan. We try to buy as much produce there as possible. I can't wait until she's old enough to understand it.

We also grow a big garden for veggies.

1. I don't make a point to buy anything organic. Though I've done it with some fruit when they look to be in better condition. Or bananas that happened to be more ripe and ready to eat. Not often though because of the price.

7/8. Our eating habits changed dramatically when our LO was born, and we are more aware of where our food comes from. I prefer organic and all natural foods when possible, which can be pricey when you add in all of the food allergies we have to accommodate for to keep the kids safe. We spend a ridiculous amount of money on food, but I've accepted it.

Somewhat important, maybe a 6? I buy organic milk and chicken & some produce (especially if for LO), but just can't afford it all the time/for everything. I look for local produce & choose cage free eggs. I need to find a local source for eggs, but keep forgetting since I don't buy them real often.

It's really important to me. I put environmental impact as a high priority in all consumer decisions I make, or at least I try to. After that is health concerns and animal welfare, both also very important to me. I do make sure to get organic dairy products that are vat pasteurized or regular pasteurized and avoid the UHT stuff. Fortunately I live in an area where there are a lot of options on the grocery shelf.

But, I do admit that I sacrificed the organic food concern when picking out a daycare. DD's current daycare doesn't put a high priority on organic meals, unlike a lot of more expensive centers around here. The tuition difference is astronomical, like double what we're paying, for those places.

6. We eat mostly organic - for us, we just find the quality of the produce, meat and dairy to be much better when you buy organic. I get my eggs from my friends who have chickens, so like others have said they aren't necessarily "organic" but they are local, free range, loved chickens so I feel good about that. I wish we could get more local produce but its a bit more challenging in the city/Northeast on a year round basis.

2-3 maybe.

We buy organic eggs and milk for LO. We drink non-organic but eat the organic eggs. I try to buy organic fruits and veggies but most of the time it's double the price, so I will just buy non-organic. I can't justify the cost. We get all of our beef that we eat from DH's uncle's cattle farm, so I would consider that local....not necessarily organic, but I know they aren't given any growth hormones or antibiotics and raised in a caring manner allowed to roam.

Only if it's the same price.

The label 'organic' isn't well regulated. I do think organic produce has less pesticides but I will buy organic produce if it's on sale. Non-organic produce just needs to be washed.

I also don't believe in the whole GMO. Many of my scientists friends agree.

2 I guess. The only thing I'm actually picky about is eggs and that's more because I want to buy from free-range chickens. They just happen to be organic as well.

5=7? I buy organic milk, daycare doesn't. We belong to an organic CSA but I buy a lot of conventional to supplement.

I appreciate the idea of organic but I often struggle to spend extra $ because I can't tell a difference in the food. I feel better about the extra money I spend on local produce (for ripeness/freshness), grass-fed meat, or free range poultry. Those differences are perceptible and it drives me to choose those products again.

I would say 2-3. We buy LO organic milk because she drinks so much of it at this age. When I was pregnant with her, DH made it a point to buy organic eggs and we bought organic meat maybe 50% of the time.

I agree with PP that the cost of food these days is high enough without paying the premium for organic (often double).

We do participate in a CSA so probably 50-60% of our fruits and veggies are organic because of that.

4; maybe? There are other things much more important to me than an organic sticker.

“Organic” doesn’t always mean healthier. It doesn’t mean more humane (to either the animals involved, the environment or the human workers involved.) It doesn’t automatically mean fresher or better quality or better flavor and I really have huge issues with the FDA requirements for the organic label and the cost to farms to be certified organic. I’d much rather buy from a small, local farm that can’t afford to be certified organic than go to Whole Foods and buy mass farmed produce that’s been flown or trucked halfway across the country.

Local is definitely a priority over organic. I am picky about hormones/antibiotic use and animal products, so I buy local meat, eggs and milk that certify they don’t use any of the above. Are they “organic” – not sure. Very unlikely they are “certified organic”. I am also very picky about eggs , for ethical reasons and for flavor reasons. The “organic, vegetarian” diet fed to chickens by most of the organic producers makes me LOL. Chickens eat bugs, insects and even small critters; that’s what they do. They shouldn’t have a 100% vegetarian diet – and most organic places push the veggie diet they feed their chickens. So, would I rather buy some eggs that are from local humane farm that feed chickens what they were designed to eat, or organic eggs from a mass argi-farm that feeds them pellets of vegetables?

I do try to carefully follow the "dirty dozen" lists, but again, that doesn't mean I would always pick a huge agri-farm organic option over other options which are likely to also be organic or low-pesticide use.

8/9 - it's important to us, but if it's not an option for what we need/financially then I don't stress over it. Basically, if an organic option is available for a reasonable price I will choose that option. I try to always buy non-gmo if not organic. I think the processed/pre-packaged things drive up our grocery bill more so than organic meat/dairy/produce. We don't eat a ton of meat though and we drink almond milk so it balances out.

8/9. I buy as much organic as I can. Luckily, where we live organic is relatively inexpensive, except for meat and we don't eat a ton of meat. If there isn't an organic option for something, I don't sweat it and I'll buy non organic no problem. But my grocery basket is probably 75-80% organic each time.

Quite important for fruits and veggies. I'm not convinced about milk - I don't like the ultra pasteurization process so I don't buy organic dairy products. Don't care at all about proceeded foods - they are ready processed! For that I care more about added sugar and salt. When LO ate purses, I made them myself. She gets an occasional pouch now that is organic.

2-3?? I tend to buy organic foods for other reasons than just that it's organic (less additives and sugar are big for me so I tend to get organic snacks/ yogurt/ pouches). I do love some high end grassfed organic meat from Whole Foods or the local butcher when we are splurging but that is not often.

My priority is fresh, whole foods over organic any day. It makes me CRAAAAAAZY when people obsess about eating strictly organic but then feed their kids crap like organic boxed mac and cheese all the time- how is that healthy?
