I still saw my mom but my dad basically did the parenting. My parents got divorced when I was 5 and he moved out of state when I was 7. We talked on the phone once in a while. No real parenting going on there. We did go visit during the summer once when he was still single. After he remarried, his wife (who was awesome) did a lot of it. Funnily enough, I have good memories of that time and feel like my dad may not have parented me much in the traditional sense when I was kid, but he was a big influence/support as I got older. My parents worked opposite schedules for a long time, so it was truly 50/50. My dad was even better at my hair when my mom was. He was the typical working dad. When I was older he traveled for work a lot too. But I def still have a lot of memories of him spending time with me & my sister on weekends and vacations! He is an amazing father. He and my mom both worked and worked a LOT but they're both academics and so had flexible schedules and could work at home. My dad went to work early and then took care of dinner prep so my mom could work late. He is an amazing grandfather too! My dad was an alcoholic who didn't work, while my mum worked multiple jobs to keep the family afloat.... so we was there a lot and was very involved with me but he didn't "parent" as such. For example, my mum had an early morning cleaning job so my dad was there when I got up for school but I picked my outfit, dressed myself, never brushed my teeth and failed to brush my hair each morning. Then I would walk myself to school (all of this from about 6 years old). Then my mum had an evening cleaning job so it was my dad who I spent evenings with. I remember them so fondly, we'd listen to music, do some gardening, he taught me to play the drums.... but minimal "parenting". Doctors appointments = mum. School report card = mum. Any discipline = mum. And if mum was home, dad was at the pub. My mom and dad were divorced so they were each solo parenting basically. My dad was stricter than my mom but in a good way. I learned a lot from him and he taught me everything I needed for adulthood. Sounds boring but I'm so grateful. We also played outside ALL the time. Looking back I don't see how he had the time to play with us so much because he worked full time and managed several properties. When I was young, my mom went to work at 5am, so dad did all of the mornings for years and he was usually home by 5:30-6. As I got older, my mom was in really poor health, so my dad was the one parenting us most of the time. My parents were divorced and my dad had me and my brother. He did a great job raising us but once we got older he was not very involved with school work or grades. He did work a lot to be able to pay for extra things for us like my brothers baseball and I played the flute and band trips. My dad didn't do much childcare when we were really little (under 3), but he did do a lot after that. And growing up my dad was very much a family man (plus he cooked and cleaned which was rare for his generation/culture). When we were older, my dad was the scary disciplinarian. (We weren't really scared of our mom). Overall he was very involved. How involved was your dad in parenting?
