We have an otoscope at home. And there's a kind you can buy that attaches to your phone and you can snap a pic. My doc will do email diagnoses with that.

Update: tried calling the doc this morning but my phone was acting up and by the time I got it sorted she seemed to be better. So I'm waiting to see how she is for the rest of the day. I think they prefer to wait two weeks which would be weds so if she is still off I'll make an appt for then but crossing my fingers...

Go back to the doctor! Last winter we had a period where we were there every 10-12 days- he'd have an ear infection, do the antibiotic, it would seem to get better but not perfect. Then we'd go back and it would turn out the antibiotic hadn't worked and they had to try something else. Good luck!

@Boogs: I've seriously considered buying one. At least I could maybe tell if they were perfectly clear or red (and then an actual professional could tell me if the redness was a true infection or whatever). Maybe Amazon prime day will have a deal on one. :silly:

@Foodnerd81: We have an otoscope at home. DH actually had an ear infection one time. We had to still go have his doctor confirm, but because I knew as soon as I saw we knew we definitely needed to go in. There have been times where we thought the kids had ear infections, but because of our otoscope we saw they didn't and saved trips to the doctor.

My doctor always had us come back two weeks to make sure it was cleared up. I've slacked with that as they got older and my boys got tubes. But honestly they probably should go back each time. My 3 year old had an ear infection three weeks ago and I took him to urgent care. I never followed up with his pediatrician and he started complaining again this week. Sure enough, it hadn't cleared up.

@Foodnerd81: B usually does - this was his sixth ear infection (at 3.5, yeesh) and the first time he hasn't been at full strength within 48 hours of amoxicillin. We got cefprozil instead which apparently tastes much worse - we had to bribe him to take it with a sticker chart and a trip to the toy state. Setting a bad precedent.

@Miss Ariel: yeah we had a 6 month span where we were in weekly for one thing or another between to the two kids, so my pediatrician would always look in the older ones ears while I was there. One time we were there for a virus and she said her ears didn't hurt and she looked and bam, another one. I hate ear infections.

@Foodnerd81: First of all, our doctor had us come back one week after diagnosis to check the infection/make sure it was gone. But I agree with you - we should be able to tell symptoms over the phone :/ Luckily now (post tubes) we can tell ourselves (drainage) and have a lot of extra drops to use. Good luck mama.

@Foodnerd81: two weeks in between ear infections. We had a double ear infection and coincidentally went in a week lately for a rash (my mil "helped" by washing ds' clothes with fabric softener after staying with them) where the doctor confirmed his ears were clear. Good thing though, because he had another one a week later, so at least we knew it cleared up in between.

@erinbaderin: I'm starting to wonder how many kids DO respond to amoxicillin. My older one didn't and we eventually started going straight to augmentin every time. Seems pretty common. (Not that I minded trying the less strong one first for this one since it's her first ear infection.).

That sounds so annoying about the goopy eye. My friends son is the same way but he isn't in daycare so He doesn't have to miss a day at least.

It's interesting about the at home strep tests...a family member is a doc and we were discussing rapid strep tests. Apparently some kids are just carriers of strep. They will typically often test positive for strep even if it is something else making them symptomatic. Which would change how you treat (ie no antibiotics)

Sometimes I feel like properly diagnosing a kid is a crapshoot.

Agree with pinkeye. B gets goopy eyes every time he gets a cold, every time I have to pick him up, take him to the doctor who always just gives me a prescription for eye drops and is never willing to write me a note saying he doesn't have pink eye, it's just a cold side effect, so he always has to miss a day of daycare when he's perfectly fine.

@Foodnerd81: B had one last week - started antibiotics on Wednesday and was worse, plus throwing up, by Friday, so we went back. Turns out it wasn't responding to the amoxicillin so we had to get something else.

Seriously. They have at home strep tests now! Doesn't it seem like science should have come up with a way to check if littles ones have an ear infection without going to the doctor every time??

What simple thing would you want to be able to diagnose at home?

Also- how soon have you gone back in to check for another ear infection after antibiotics? I had my 18 month old in almost 2 weeks ago for double ear infection. She seemed to be getting better after a couple days on antibiotics but it's pretty bad again so I will be calling in the morning.
