3.5 - Can count to 100 although sometimes thinks the next 10 is the next #. Can sight see quantities up to a it 4. Can do very very simple addition. Can also count to 19 in Spanish!

LO can count past 100 and by 2, 5s, 10s. She adds and subtracts on her fingers mainly. She is pretty good with patterns and taught her 3D shapes and she can pretty much tell time. She does 48 piece puzzles. Not really sure where to take her next. 3s? She starts kindergarten in a month so she is pretty good with math already. Lots of great math shows out there.
Umizoomi
Peg + Cat
Odd Squad were LOs favorites
I remember counting aloud with LO as I pushed her on a swing in Central Park when she was 18 months. This lady came by and totally gave me the eye, like I was trying to prove something. I could tell because she then started pushing her kid and saying something super duper crazy stuff really loud with her baby while glaring at me. I felt a bit bummed but truly this kind of thing just comes naturally. It is not forced. I was like that as a kid and wished my mom did more with me. LO seems to enjoy it too. And again what is natural for one seems pushy to another.

not quite 4 year old - (usually) counts objects correctly up to 8 or 9, but often isn't bothered with it (doesn't care or will count incorrectly seemingly on purpose) - identifies most single digits correctly; no interest in addition.

newly 2 year old - counts to 12 or so in English and Spanish, sometimes/often counts objects correctly up to 3 or 5. She surprised me recently by identifying a number 1, then a few others, unprompted when we were doing a puzzle.

I think they're fine where they are, and don't intend to push them, but am always impressed/surprised to see peers who are super into numbers. DH and I are both math & science people (him even more so than me).

She's not quite three, so I don't really expect much but she can count up to in the 20's and further (but not as accurately). She understands simple addition subtraction when using real-life objects. Like if I tell her to take 5 bites, she knows how many bites she has left after she's taken 3 bites.

I am not a math person, so I have to remind myself to take the natural opportunities that arise in life to do simple math--like the counting bites thing. Generally speaking, pointing out math concepts doesn't come as easily to me as pointing out verbal concepts.

DD1 has been interested in adding and subtracting smaller numbers and doing simple math since about 2.5 years old, and recognizing patterns. I actually have a video of her at 18 months old, counting 11 socks, haha. She now counts to 100 and can also sort of count by 10s. She thinks math is fun. DD2 is now 2, and does a lot of counting up and backwards, and adds small sums of things just in passing, "Oh those are MY 3 blocks!" She can also count objects up to about 10 or so, and can count in general to 20, and then it gets spotty and numbers get missed.

@looch: i also feel like i have a math related learning disability!! my parents really tried to help me though - i had a math tutor from about 3rd grade through the end of middle school off & on -- didn't help much. Strangely I was great at Algebra and got all A's... but basic math & geometry were really difficult for me.

I also notice that my 3 year old son is really into numbers already, he's always counting and adding things up - hopefully he's got much better skillz than me! haha

my LO is 3.5 and is not reading, or doing math. he can count, but i'm not sure he can even recognize numbers. i'm pretty comfortable with all of that. until, that is, i started reading this thread.

@looch: that is amazing! My DH is a whiz with numbers and can do so much complicated math in his head. His CFO is always amazed at his ability to calculate stuff so quickly. I need paper or a calculator. Some people are just able to do math in their head - definitely not me! But I wouldn't worry about your LO's strength with numbers - he can still develop a love of reading! He's still so young! Often it's finding the right books to capture his interest - possibly books about numbers. My DH would read things like Math Magic when he was little bc he loved numbers. He was a numbers guy for sure from a young age but he got a perfect on his verbal section of the SATs. So being a numbers focused kid won't necessarily preclude him from also being strong with reading comprehension/writing.

My LO is much stronger with reading so we'll see how numbers develop for her. She could count from an early age (consistently counting to 20 by 2 and up to 100 by 3 but still will occasionally repeat certain sequences if she's not super focused). At 4.5 she can do very simple math (different combinations adding up to 10, can count to 100 by 2s, 5s, and 10s). They do a lot of games at school to make numbers fun

@looch: my son sounds like yours, not as strong in the reading area but better with numbers. But again, we've never pushed either reading or math, he just gravitates more naturally to numbers. He can add and seems to understand number concepts quickly. He still skips 14 when he counts though. Not sure why.

She's 2.5 and numbers are probably her favorite thing. She can only add and subtract if stuff is in front of her. Like she loves counting her blueberries with dinner then eating some and telling me how many there are left. And she loves when I have the weather channel on cause she'll tell me to pause it and read me all the temperatures :silly:

@Truth Bombs: I know! I think I actually have a some kind of math related learning disabilty. I am convinced if I had intervention as a child, I wouldn't have the issues that I have with math! I learned to cover it up well though, most of my collegues are stunned when I tell them how poorly I did in math as a child.

She's Ok. She just turned 5, can count fine but once in awhile she'll randomly get mixed up still, even with recognizing some of the double digit numbers she'll still get confused sometimes but not other times. She can do very basic addition and subtraction with tacking on small numbers. I think she understands the concept of multiplication and she's decent with space and shapes.

@looch: Ha! How shameful for a finance girl!

My LO is three and a half and we are just starting to understand adding and subtracting but she needs to use her fingers for anything bigger than like 3+2=5

The post on reading got me thinking, particularly about my own son's weaknessses and strengths. While he's not able to read at 5.5 (kindergarten in September), he's able to roll dice and add the numbers in his head without counting on his fingers. He can count by increments, 2, 5, 10, identify patterns, and is learning how to measure liquids now.

This is fascinating to me because I require a calculator to do even very simple calculations (I can't picture the numbers in my head) and even on paper, I make tons of computation errors. I was an early reader though, so I wonder how to nurture that in my uninterested child. I don't want him to be solely a "numbers guy," if that makes sense.

What about your kids?
