My child loves her K teacher and she has made huge gains. She is advanced in reading and writing, and just started adding two digit numbers, sometimes in her head. The only area she needed to work on was 'independence/self directed' but at this age that is so subjective. I am also guessing she needs to work on communicating in front of the group, like show and tell but not sure.. She really wants to do her best for her teacher. Somehow I lost that at home where she is extremely self directed!

I think the expectations are on track.

My son is in kindergarten, and I will admit, I was stressing at the beginning of the year because they jump right in and expect kids to be reading by Christmas. They do a DIBELS reading assessment and I was fully expecting it to come back that he is way behind the expected level.

Well, it came back that he's right on track and to my surprise, he's reading and comprehending the material. He's found books that he likes with the help of the media teacher at the school, he has the support that he needs and he somehow has the motivation (which he lacked over the summer when I tried to introduce sight words). I am impressed with the staff, they know what they are doing and it really required me to trust them and let them do what they do best.

As for mathematics, my son is naturally inclined and he seems to be on track there. He's also learning Spanish (his third language now) and he's able to spell and say simple phrases. Again, so impressed with the staff!

Mine is in public pre-k 3, for a full day. We also just had teacher conferences last week and I was really excited to see what her teachers would say.

Basically, she's doing great! They said emotionally, she never had any trouble adjusting. That's not a surprise to me because she's always been very adaptable. They said she's polite and friends with everyone. They gave us the results of the literacy test they give at the beginning and end of the school year and out of 48 upper and lower case letters, she knew 46 of them. She can write her first name and is working on her last name. She's knows most of the sounds for beginning consonants. She can easily draw most basic shapes and can draw a person with a face with all features, hair, ears, body with arms, legs, and even hands and fingers. She can count objects up to 20 by herself. After that she just needs help remembering what comes after the 9--like instead of 20-10, it's 30. One of the things her preschool looks for is if they can "play plan". Each day, they have to draw a picture of what they want to do that day--and they said she's really good at both drawing herself (a person) AND what she is doing (an action).

The only thing they gave to work on is sharing. Which I see that same issue at home with little sister, so that was not a surprise. Overall, I was happy to see she's doing find because she's one of the two youngest and also the smallest in her class.

Before I make this sound like one big pat on the back, I fully realize that my oldest just has an easy personality and is interested in reading/letters.

My second is the opposite, and I anticipate that when she starts daycare next year, and then real Pre-K the year after that, we will have a much more difficult transition. She basically hates other people and will scream if people even look at her, literally.

We just had conferences for LO last night, and we went over strengths and weaknesses. She is in preschool and they want her to be able to count to 20 at this point, and at least 30 within the next month or two. She can get to 20 but skips 15. She can count to 30 with a little help. Her scissor skills need some work, she hasn't quite figured out how to cut out shapes, but can cut in lines. She can write her name and identify all but 1 Uppercase Letter and about 70% of lowercase.

I kind of think it's crazy how much kids are required to know at the age of 4. I guess just because when I was 5 all we did was play, and maybe work on some letters. So the conference was quite an eye opener for me. They really stressed all the stuff we need to be working on at home, and sent home a bunch of notes/tips.

How is your LO doing academically, so far? Do you think kids are expected to know too much at younger ages these days or do you think it's right on track?
